Jeffrey firmly refused. "You should focus on your studies right now. Don't overwork yourself and ruin your health. I can still manage. I'll figure out the money issue."
Joanne, understanding the situation, chimed in, "Jack, don't worry about me. I'll stop buying snacks and use my school supplies more sparingly."
But Jack shook his head resolutely. "My part-time job is very easy and related to my major. It won't wear me out."
He didn't dare tell his family how much he had saved, fearing they would worry he was involved in something illegal.
Jeffrey wanted to persuade him further, but seeing Jack's determination, he reluctantly agreed. In his heart, however, he felt even more gratified by Jack's maturity and thoughtfulness.
During the New Year holidays, following Perthter traditions, people enjoyed a relaxed day in their homes.
Early in the morning, Jack's phone began ringing non-stop as New Year's greetings from high school and university classmates flooded in. Though most messages were generic templates, Jack politely replied to each one.
When he received a New Year's greeting from Phoebe, who was studying abroad in Brightland, Jack's heart couldn't help but skip a beat.
Phoebe's message read, "Happy New Year! Jack, how have you been?"
Attached was a photo of Phoebe standing in a field of lavender, dressed in exotic attire, wearing sunglasses, and smiling brightly.
This wasn't a group message but one specifically written for Jack.
A mix of emotions surged within him as he replied, "I'm doing well! How about you? Happy New Year."
But after sending the message, it felt like it had disappeared into the void as Phoebe didn't respond again.
