The way he looked at her... and the understanding dawn on Zuri now, which was confirmed by Lorent in what he said next.
"She is my mate. I will kill anyone, who hurt her like this." This time, his eyes were ablaze with anger, but then he lifted his head and looked at Zuri. "Don’t you think that’s how a mate should be? They will put you first, no matter what the reason, no matter what the circumstance and no matter what at stake."
Zuri seemed to notice, who this woman was. Khaos told her once about a young girl from Rhett’s maternal family, who stayed in Great Palace for a few years before the downfall of the old dynasty. Was that little girl at that time was this woman? It matched with her age if she was more than a decade older than Khaos.
"Can Khaos do that for you? Can he stop the ritual for you? Or are you simply being useful for him? And he doesn’t have any scrupulous of using you."
Zuri felt like she needed to turn around and stop listening to him, because he got on her nerves and she was angry.
Not because she was upset of what he said, but because she knew that he was right. It got on her nerves because she knew from the beginning that she was useful to Khaos and he used her like anyone else in her life.
But in her defense, she allowed him to do so, that’s why it was different.
However, when she thought about it, the angrier she became. She didn’t know why she felt this immense rage within her.
Probably because she expected more of him. She expected him to choose her. She expected him not to hurt her.
"You crossed the line Sir Lorent." Zuri’s voice was steady, despite the turmoil inside her. "That’s not how you should address him. I will let it slide this time, but if that happened again. I think your brother’s sacrifice to step down from the throne will be a waste of effort, because I will have you and this woman beheaded for treason."
No. Khaos killed Elijah because he kidnapped her and he didn’t allow them to put the last curse on her. He chose her... right?
"Good night."
And with that, she walked away from Lorent. She grabbed her own hands, they were trembling, the voices in her head were getting louder, mocking her and laughing at her. Telling her the same thing that Lorent said.
Zuri felt like there was fire inside of her body, which was hard to be extinguished, it gnawed in her chest and burned her with anger.
Her whole body was trembling, it was overwhelming, but what was harder to control was her rage. Her desire to kill someone to quench the fury that gnawed in her mind.
Frenzy thoughts flashed in her mind and she didn’t know where she was going, this garden was confusing, there were so many red colors around her. The color of blood. She wanted to see blood...
