Jeremy honestly couldn't understand how Melody was capable of feeling that many emotions daily. It felt like she was affected by anything and everything. Truth be told, in his eyes, she was irrational and unintelligent.
At the same time, Melody's hand had been grabbed. Her red eyes were bright with tears, and it took her a while to find her voice. "Are you saying I'm emotional?"
She had no idea how Jeremy arrived at this conclusion, but she was in a state of mess now. She simply couldn't think logically at the moment. The only response she could think of was a brief and truthful one.
"I'm feeling a little disheartened and wanted to talk to you about it initially. The patient on bed number four just passed away. They couldn't save him."
By the time she got to the last part of her sentence, Melody was already sobbing, unable to suppress the sadness even if she wanted to.
Although Jeremy's expression softened a little and his cloudy eyes eased up as well, there was still that cold indifference between them.
Lowering his gaze, he glanced at Melody, looking all businesslike. "You feel heartbroken because you lost the patient on bed number four, but you have also neglected your responsibility for the other patients as well.
"You failed to adapt to a common occurrence in a hospital. Have you thought about the other patients waiting for you to treat them? What would happen to them if you allowed yourself to be this emotional every time?"
The break room was quite spacious and empty. Jeremy's voice reverberated in there and hit Melody hard. His words hurt her in a way that kept suppressing her, forcing her to hold her breath as she looked at him in a daze.
Jeremy continued to speak in a reproachful and confident tone. "You're here because you took some time off. Let me ask you something. You lost some time when you allowed yourself to get emotional over the death of the patient on bed number four.
"How about the patient on the next bed and the one after that? In fact, what about all the other patients you are supposed to look after?
"Melody Wardolf, you are being irresponsible if you can't keep a clear head under harrowing circumstances, and that is just the worst."
Jeremy had rarely addressed her by her full name, let alone say this much to her, albeit condemning her for her mistake.
"The hospital isn't a place for you to wallow in anguish. Plenty of other patients are waiting to be rescued." He might have sounded calm, but there was an authoritative pressure in this tone.
