ELLA’S POV
I woke up to the incessant ring of my phone that was on the floor next to my bed. I didn’t even open my eyes to look at it. I didn’t care who it was. I just wanted them to leave me alone.
I heard the staggering footsteps of Jack climbing the stairs and down the hall before he stopped in front of my room and started bashing on the door.
“Would you shut that fucking phone up? Who the fuck is calling at this time of the fucking morning anyway? What is wrong with you, you little bitch? How can you sleep through that? Shut that fucking noise up.” He yelled while constantly bashing on the door.
So I slowly rolled over and I picked up my phone. I didn’t even look at who was calling me. I just ignored it. I looked at the time on the phone and it said that it was 9am.
“What the hell is going on out here?” Marilyn yelled coming out of the bedroom.
“That damn daughter of yours won’t answer her phone. It fucking woke me up.” Jack yelled.
“Is her door locked again? I told her to stop locking that fucking door.” Marilyn yelled barging down the room and trying to turn the door handle. I just sat there and listened to them.
They both started arguing with each other right outside my bedroom and I just laid there for a while listening to them. But they ended up taking their fight to the bedroom. I could still hear them, just not as clearly. Which I was fine with. Their fights weren’t that interesting anyway.
I climbed out of bed and I got dressed and I grabbed my bag and left my room. I was about to walk down the stairs when Marilyn grabbed me by the arm and stopped me.
“Listen to me you little bitch, this is your final warning. If I don’t get that check by tomorrow, you’re out of here. You’re on the streets and it’s almost winter. Do you really think you’ll survive a winter here without a roof over your head?” Marilyn said, pointing her perfectly manicured finger in my face.
I just stared blankly at Marilyn when she shook me to get my attention.
“Do you understand?” She gritted through her teeth.
“Yeah.” I said. So she let go of my arm and she stood there staring at the blank look on my face as I stared back at her.
I turned to walk down the stairs without saying another word to Marilyn and straight out the front door of the house and I started walking down the long driveway.
I pulled my phone out and I called Wendy’s number.
“Ella. Is that you?” She asked.
“In the flesh. I’m not sure if that’s what you wanted to hear or not.” I said.
“What are you talking about? Of course I’m glad to hear from you.” She said.
“What happened last night?” I asked, cutting straight to the point.
“I believed everything that Leia told me. I’m so sorry. I’m an idiot. She told me that she was getting back together with Tristan and that she didn’t hate you anymore because she now understands that there’s nothing going on between you two. I did try to go to that party last night but when I got there, it was the wrong house.” Wendy explained. And I was trying to decide whether or not I believed her. I wanted to. She was my only friend here. But it was once again really hard to believe anyone.
“So? You said that you were going to pick me up.” I said.
“I know. When I realized that it was the wrong address, I asked the twins to pick you up. I knew that they would protect you against whatever Leia was planning.” She said.
“Or you could have just called me and told me not to go.” I said.
