“Is there anything else?” Sophia did not share the same complex feelings as him. She only felt appalled and she just simply did not want to see him anymore.
William had indeed come over to see her for other reasons but he did not know how to tell her.
However, Sophia did not give him much time to contemplate. “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to leave now.”
With him standing next to her, she felt as if she was standing beside a pile of garbage and the stench was unbearable.
“Wait a minute ——” William’s hand reached out to grab her again, but instantly shrank as soon as he saw the look in her eyes.
Sophia did not bother to hide her disgust toward him. She took a few steps backward and widened the distance between the two of them. “William, I can’t even remember how many times you have gone back on your words at this point.”
He had promised her more than once that he would never show up in front of her anymore, yet he never followed through with his words.
William opened his mouth slightly to talk but no words came to mind. With no way of defending himself, he merely gave her a bitter smile.
Just as Sophia was about to urge him to quickly speak his mind, she felt someone watching from afar. She followed her instincts and looked around, and sure enough, Audrey was standing among the crowd not far away casting occasional glances at the two of them.
“Hurry up if you still have anything to say, your fiancé is staring over there and I don’t want her to accuse me of being a vixen trying to seduce you.”
After all, Audrey and his mother loved doing that.
William followed her gaze and paused when he saw Audrey. Instantly, his face was filled with bitterness. “I want to apologize to you on behalf of my mother and Audrey for what they did to you in the past.”
“They humiliated me in front of so many people, calling me a vixen and a dirty mistress, yet you think an apology from you on behalf of them would suffice?” Sophia replied snarkily.
Besides, the two of them showed no signs of remorse, so this apology would only seem fake and even more repulsive!
William curled his fists. He felt as if his heart was being strangled, and every heartbeat became slower and more difficult.
The scars and injuries he had left were real, and even if he apologized thousands of times more, nothing would change how she felt.
“You’re changing the topic,” Sophia said, “Your fiancé is still staring, just hurry up and say whatever you want to say.”
William looked at her hesitantly, and after stuttering for a while, he said, “Don’t worry, she won’t say anything.”
“There’s nothing between the two of us so why should I be concerned about what she has to say?” Sophia replied.
She just did not want to be dragged into another undeserved mess!
“She’s just waiting for an answer.” William’s expression was filled with agony, along with a hint of relief and guilt.
Sophia was really not in the mood to deal with him anymore, and so she played along and asked, “What answer?”
“Jones Group’s capital chain has ruptured and I would like… to ask you for your help and see if Sterling would be willing to lend the Jones family some money to tide us over. If you say yes, Audrey will stay with me, but if you don’t, she’ll call off our engagement.”
William’s head lowered even deeper when he got to the last part of his sentence. At that moment, he was so ashamed he wished he could crawl into a hole and hide.
