The door opened, jolting me back to reality. The nurse stepped out of the room. “You can enter now,” she said, turning toward me. A shadow of sympathy crossed her clear blue eyes as she laid a comforting hand on my shoulder before walking away.
Trose from my seat and entered Mom’s room while wiping the tears from my cheeks.
Mom was asleep on the bed again. Watching her so helpless only made me cry more.
I was still crying when the door flung open and Celine strode inside, looking as pale as a ghost. When her tear stresked eyes landed on mine, I realized she’d been crying too, Just as I was about to ask the reason for her tears, she told me the had met the doctor in the hallway, and he had told her the
news.
“I don’t want to lose her, Celine,” I sobbed, clutching my tight chest. “I can’t afford to lose her. Once she’s gone, I will have no family left with me.”
Celine crossed the distance between us. Within seconds, she was beside me, squeezing my fingers to comfort me while tears fell down her flushed cheeks. “I don’t want to lose her too, Lily. She’s like the mother I never had,” she said, rubbing my back with her other hand.

We were in that exact position when the door flung open, and Grey strode into the room. He spotted us quickly. Noticing the expression on our faces, his lips pursed into a grim line. “What’s wrong?” he asked as he pulled to a stop.
Celine and I looked at each other. As though we understood what each other was thinking, Celine rose to her feet. “ll be outside so the two of you can talk,” she told me. When I nodded, she immediately left the room, leaving me alone with Grey.
rey made no sound as he crossed the distance between us. In a matter of seconds, he reached my side and sat beside me on the sola. “What happened?” he inquired. His gray eyes lingered on my face, filled with questions.
“The doctor talked to me a while ago,” I replied in a barely audible whisper. With some difficulty, I continued, “He told me Mom’s not going to last long.” Tears clouded my vision when I finished speaking
Grey’s Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed deeply. “I’m not going to tell you that everything will be alright because I’m not sure they ever will,” he told me bluntly, though his tone remained gentle.
I swallowed the lump in my throat the way he did. Grey wasn’t trying to sugarcoat is words, and I admired him for that. He wasn’t trying to give me false hapes by doing so.
“But I will be by your side il worse comes to worst, Lily,” Grey contincio, and I was taken aback by his sincerity. My mind went blank, and I couldn’t say a
word.
The beep from Grey’s phone shattered the awkward silence. He glanced at the phone screen and rose from the sofa afterward. “I be back,” he told me.
“Where are you going?” I asked before he reached the door,
“To meet the delivery man. I ordered supporso we don’t have to go outside to gal. He pulled the door open and stepped out.
