"Kellen, you’ve had your head down all morning. What are you working on?" Brent asked, leaning over from where he was stuffing his face full of a sweet treat, the bags under his eyes apparent.
Apparently, they had made a bad decision when they had invited Casper out. No one had known that the man was going to be a loose cannon. Kellen had no idea how they couldn’t have realised that. The man never did anything fun, and that was coming from Kellen.
At least Kellen had cooking and now, reading. He had been able to maintain his cooking throughout his time on the front lines. He was unsure what enjoyment Casper had kept by his side during all this time, but it was clear from what he had heard from Hill, Charlie, and Brent that Casper had gone off the deep end.
The man was recovering in his office, the lights off, and a puke bucket nearby. Brent had been laughing when he told Kellen what Casper had gotten up to, and how the man had participated in a drinking contest and had gotten so drunk he’d kissed a random man at the bar. Karen had been so proud, practically glowing when she recounted the moment.
Kellen hadn’t gone to check on him yet, but had sent him a small care package to help him recover. It included a warm blanket, and noise cancelling headphones.
Charlie had returned in one piece, and was actually quite happy. He had gotten alone with Gwen’s friends quite well, and they had taken great care of him. Charlie had enjoyed his time out, and had even told Kellen that he really enjoyed it because no one was forcing him to do anything, and he got to drink a lot of sugar. He hates the taste of alcohol, and he got to dance. He had a great time.
Kellen was worried about the two Guides for two very opposite reasons, but he was glad that they had actually gone out. Despite his concerns, Kellen had his own to worry about.
The episode with Rhys this morning, once he had more time to wake up, had been really concerning. Both of them had a meltdown yesterday. He was sure it was because the two of them had been shouldering a lot of stress for the Guild, and that was reasonable, but Kellen needed to make sure that Rhys didn’t get to a point where he blacked out again. freёwebnovel.com
It was clear it had shaken him greatly, and Kellen would need to put some things in place so that he could help him as much as he could. Of course, Kellen was going to suggest therapy again. He kind of felt like a broken record, but Kellen wasn’t going to suggest it without doing it himself. He had reached out in the morning to his therapist on the front lines through email, and was just waiting for her reply.
He trusted the Guild therapists, but once you had built a rapport with someone, you wanted to keep working with them. Having to explain yourself over and over did get exhausting. If Kellen wanted Rhys to go to therapy, and Gunther, hell, everyone, he needed to lead by example. So, he was going to do that.
He now had a bit of freedom to do so, since shortly after he had calmed Rhys down, and he had gotten him back to sleep but Kellen was now wide awake, he had received word that all of the background checks had come back.
Only two had been flagged for something illegal that they had done in the past. Some petty shoplifting, and defacing of government property. It was not something that Kellen would hold against them, since they had both done the community service that had been handed to them as they were minors when these transgressions happened, and that was what the judge had decided at the time.
It meant that because Casper was in a terrible condition, Kellen had stepped away from his morning class and had left Brent to lead the physical training class with Esper Blake and Kellen had taken the new Guides on a tour through the tower, explained their duties, and thanked them for coming and helping while they were dealing with their Guide issues.
It had been wonderful seeing all of them, and the Guides from his old Center welcomed everyone warmly, especially Gabby. Casper had shown his face after Kellen left, greeting them for a brief moment before going back to his office. Apparently he had looked like death. Kellen was a little upset that he had missed it.
But the new Guides meant that some of the stress that was on Kellen’s shoulders was gone, and Taylor? Taylor was getting tested with every last fucking Guide as they spoke. Not anything formal, just a quick test with simple Guiding, along with the rest of her team. They were high priority, and Rhys was fully for it.
