An entire task force entered the room, with riot shields, assault rifles, shotguns, and all the good stuff.
"Don’t say anything! I’ll solve everything! If you’re questioned, demand a lawyer! Never speak with the police without an attorney present!" Kaiden shouted his instructions so all the women could hear him perfectly well, which earned him threatening growls from multiple police officers.
They allowed themselves to be placed in handcuffs—well, only Kaiden did; the others couldn’t fight back even if they wanted to. They were quickly escorted to the police station.
Thankfully, Kaiden had at least enough time to cancel his timed message to Aria. The girls were likely in the middle of their gym session, he didn’t want to scare them needlessly.
...
"My name is Detective Montgomery, the lead detective of your case," a man grunted as he sat down in front of Kaiden in the isolated interrogation room he was dragged to. "To start, let me read you your rights."
"No need to," Kaiden said nonchalantly.
"I’m afraid I must do so. My hands are tied by the words written in the hefty book I rested my hand on while I swore my oath," the officer replied.
"I want to have a phone call with someone."
"With whom?"
"My mother."
"..." The detective hesitated for a second. Kaiden was not technically under arrest yet, so Montgomery wasn’t obligated to let him make a call.
"If I can’t have my call, then I’ll ask for a lawyer."
Kaiden’s declaration made Montgomery curse inwardly. He didn’t understand why this cold-blooded murderer would want to have a phone call with someone who was not his lawyer. Did he seriously want to have a final call with Mommy before getting officially charged with multiple first-degree murders?
However, if the young man called for a lawyer, then this questioning would end immediately, so letting him make a phone call was the better option. Maybe hearing his mommy’s sweet voice would make him want to confess without trouble. Many such cases happened during his long career.
"Sure, lad. Whatever makes you comfortable. Here, use mine," he nodded and handed his cell phone over. "But you’ll have to put it on speaker mode."
Kaiden grabbed it and dialed his mother’s secret private number that only a few people had the privilege of knowing.
"Yes?" Vespera Ashborn picked up immediately.
"It’s me. I need your help."
"Why?"
"I killed some people."
"Why?"
"They were the kind of people who forced women to get addicted to drugs and sell themselves for mere pittances."
"I’ll take care of it."
"Make sure you help the women as well. They were detained alongside me."
Vespera put the phone down as an answer to his last comment. Montgomery looked at him with wide, shocked eyes. Did he just confess to his crimes in an interrogation room where his conversation was being recorded? In front of the lead detective of his case?!
However, he was a professional, so he managed to gather his bearings. He needed to gather as much information from the suspect as possible to make his conviction a homerun victory in court—though it already was a done-and-dusted case, as far as he was concerned.
