Effie realized Lyman would be arriving any minute, so she turned to Yolande and spoke. “When you threatened me with that knife earlier, where were you planning to take me? And once we got there, were you going to figure out how to torture me?”

Yolande’s eyes widened in disbelief. She stared at Effie, thrown off balance.

Just moments ago, Yolande had thought Effie would be easy to control, someone she could manipulate without effort. She hadn’t expected this woman to be so perceptive, to see through her every move.

She eyed Effie warily, completely thrown by the sudden shift in attitude—Effie was now volunteering to go with her?

Effie’s expression was cool and collected, lips curling into a faint, icy smile. “You were told to bring me to them, right? I’ll cooperate. Isn’t that what you want?”

Yolande frowned, suspicion etched across her face. “What’s your angle? What are you really planning?”

Effie turned her gaze to the distance, where a car was rapidly approaching—that would be Lyman. Her voice was soft but resolute, leaving no room for argument. “I just want to see what they’re after, after putting so much effort into this trap.”
