Effie looked like she wanted to say something else, but just then her phone rang. Worried about disturbing Nita, she quickly answered and tiptoed into the bathroom to take the call.

“Hello?” Effie whispered.

Hearing her hushed, conspiratorial tone, Lyman couldn't help but ask, “You're awake? What are you up to?”

Effie replied, “Yeah, I just woke up. But Nita only just got in, and I don't want to keep her up, so I'm hiding in the bathroom to take your call.”

“What a shame,” Lyman said.

“Hm?” Effie was puzzled.

Lyman chuckled. “Nothing, really. You hungry? Let's get some breakfast.”

“Okay, sounds good.”

Lyman was waiting for her outside, and Effie joined him a moment later.

He reached for her hand, but she sidestepped him.

With an exaggerated look of resignation, Lyman said, “We're out together, can't I at least hold your hand?”

Seeing his puppy-dog expression, Effie felt a pang of guilt. She relented, reached out, and took his hand with a sigh. She could never stay tough for long.

Lyman's disappointment instantly melted into delight. He squeezed her hand, clearly reluctant to let go.

“So, where are you taking me today?” Effie asked, curiosity piqued.
