He fumbled for his phone, dialing the numbers of the people he’d put on the job, but every call went straight to voicemail.

Effie looked at him and said, “If you want to make a call right now, you should call your mom and ask her to find someone to help you. But you know, ordering someone to kidnap an innocent old woman—that’s a crime that could land you behind bars for a good while.”

Mitchell’s pupils contracted. Shock and rage flashed across his face.

“Effie, you really are ungrateful! You cast aside the old for the new without a second thought! Are you just going to toss aside everything we had together so easily?” he demanded, his voice twisted with pain.

Effie had no interest in continuing this argument. Their relationship had ended the moment he cheated; whatever love they once shared had long since faded from her memory.

She couldn’t even recall the last time she’d thought about Mitchell.

“Effie, E&M was our life’s work! Are you really going to destroy it?” Mitchell’s anger only grew as Effie ignored him, every word practically dripping with venom, as though he wanted to tear her apart.
