Thalia wasn't who Heston, Lexie, and Velquin saw.
To Heston, it was a bloodied child with severed limbs and a numb expression. To Velquin, it was the long-lost Lucan.
As for Lexie, it was Heston. To be exact, it was not the current Heston, but the one who'd completely turned into the Unmelting Bone. He was surrounded by rolling filth energy and brought about world-shattering destruction.
These were deepest fears and most soul-shaking phantoms buried in their hearts.
Though Heston was now the Unmelting Bone and stripped of memories from his human life, his body and marrow still remembered.
He remembered the war-torn years, shattered lands, and the corpses scattered across the battlefields. Even when his flesh had rotted away and only the bones remained, those were memories he never dared forget.
Heston remembered, and so did Velquin.
As for Lexie, her fear came from the moment she'd forged a contract with the Unmelting Bone. The more pride she'd shown then, the deeper her anxiety ran.
In the beginning, she'd been worried she wasn't strong enough to wield Heston's power, and that he'd fall under her command and be ruined.
As time passed and he grew stronger, she started to worry that the Unmelting Bone she contracted would no longer be under her control.
If that day came, she might have to invoke the shared fate spell and die with Heston.
But…
"Heston" asked, "Would you accept that?
"Everyone once feared the Unmelting Bone and only wanted him sealed away forever. Why did you step forward and form a contract with him? Was it for your people's honor or some measly reward?
"You risked your life to bond with the Unmelting Bone, but what did you get? If I were you, I'd use the power of the Unmelting Bone now that I have it. I'd commend the dead and make them bow to me…"
