Other than that, the production crew would provide an individual subsidy for every family that hosted the cast members. The Longmans would treat Olivia and Shannon well even if it was just because of the subsidy.
After having lunch at the Longman residence, Shannon finally asked about the disturbances in the village in a casual manner.
"Things aren't that bad in the village itself. People would hear knocks on their doors in the middle of the night, and the vegetable patches were ruined, but that's about it.
"Other than that, the things placed outside or in the yards would be destroyed. One of the families, our cousin's family actually, bought a new car last year, but it was scratched when they parked it in their yard. However, the people in the house never heard any noises.
"Also, someone's new motorcycle had its rearview mirrors wrenched off."
David's father, Henry Longman, smoked a cigarette as he recounted what had happened in the village in the past six months.
"As for our family, David experienced most of the disturbances. He was in charge of watching the mandrakes last month, and when he woke up, he somehow found himself at the bottom of the mountain.
"It's a good thing that it happened in the summer. If he was left by the road in winter, he'd have frozen to death.
"At first, everyone said that David sleepwalked down the mountain by himself, but on the second day, he found himself at the foot of the mountain again. They switched guards later on, but the other guard ended up at the foot of the mountain as well.
"That's not the worst part, though. More importantly, the mandrakes planted in the mountains hadn't even matured before they were dug out. We suffered a huge loss in the past six months.
"As for the villagers in charge of harvesting the mandrakes, they would encounter various accidents as soon as they entered the mountains. Some would trip and fall into a hole, and others would crash into trees out of the blue. Some of them began to develop fevers and got sick after leaving the mountains…
"Everyone is saying that the god of the mountains is preventing the villagers from entering the mountains, but we had no choice. Our survival depends on the mountain-grown mandrakes."
When Henry finished speaking, he took a deep drag of the cigarette. Just that single movement burned about a third of the cigarette. He had a weary and sorrowful look on his face. Instead of smoke, he seemed to be exhaling his gloominess in recent days.
Many families in the village faced situations just like the Longmans.
They could tolerate the disturbances, and even if some things were destroyed, no one was seriously hurt.
However, after six months of torture, the villagers couldn't stand it anymore.
