Darya waved her phone and flashed an impish smile at Douglas. “The wonders of modern technology.‘

She made a mental note to thank Glen later.

Despite his tendencies to lecture, the man was one of the best assistants she ever worked with.

He respected her decision to handle the situation by herself, yet offered his help in subtler ways, including finding out and telling her what Douglas had been up to.

Douglas showed up at the bar so fast after Darya called him because he happened to be in the same neighbourhood, celebrating his daughter’s birthday at a restaurant two blocks away from the Twilight.

‘You bitch!‘

Darya grabbed Timothy and eased back out of harm’s way, just as a young woman pushed through the crowd, yelling as she smacked Sharon hard across the face.

‘Edna!‘ Douglas stood rooted to the spot, mouth wide open.

‘Don’t!‘ the girl spun around.

Tears streamed down her cheeks and smudged her makeup.

‘It’s–it’s n–not what you think!‘ Douglas stammered.

‘Are you having an affair with this woman?‘ the girl called Edna asked. ‘Don’t lie to me! I heard everything!‘

Douglas tried to grab her hand. ‘Edna, let’s just get out of here. I’ll explain when we-‘

‘Tell me!‘ Edna shook off his hand. ‘Yes or no. It’s a simple question.‘

Douglas’s silence served as confirmation.

Edna took a deep breath. ‘I hate you! How can you do this to me? To Mom?‘

She started moving towards the exit. ‘I’m telling Mom.‘

‘Wait, Edna! Please don’t tell your mother!‘ Douglas chased after his daughter. ‘I’m not having an affair, I swear!”

‘Doug!‘ Sharon clung to his waist. ‘Help me! I think I twisted my ankle.”

‘Oh for Christ’s sake, leave me alone!‘ Douglas struggled to break free. ‘I’m in enough trouble as it is!”

Sharon pretended like she didn’t hear him.

This was her one chance to break up Douglas’s marriage and make him marry her.

She’d be a fool not to seize it.

Edna turned around and flew into another rage when she saw the woman with her arms locked around

Timothy whispered in Darya’s ear, ‘Did you set this up?‘

‘All I did was make a couple of calls,‘ Darya shrugged. ‘I didn’t force the man to have an affair.

Apparently, Edna shared Darya’s view.

She snatched her hand away from Douglas and wiped her tears. ‘I don’t want to see your face at our house. Mom won’t want to see you.‘

‘You are kicking me out?‘ Douglas stared at his daughter in disbelief. ‘But it’s my house!”

‘It’s Mom’s house!‘ Edna shouted. ‘She paid for it!‘

She shot a venomous look in Sharon’s direction. ‘If you like this woman so much, why don’t you go live with

her?‘

For maximum impact, Darya chose this moment to drop the second bombshell. ‘Director Kay, if I recall correctly, there is a morals clause in your contract with Paragon. I’m afraid I’ll have to report what happened here tonight to the board. They’ll have to hold a meeting to decide if you are in breach of the clause and, if yes, whether to dismiss you from the company.‘

Timothy gave her a high–five when he thought no one was watching. ‘Nicely done, Dolly.”

Douglas glanced back and forth between his daughter and Darya, torn by indecision.

In the end, he decided to try to save his job first. ‘Miss Miller, it’s not what you think!‘

Darya waved her phone. ‘My opinion doesn’t matter. The truth does. The board will review a recording of tonight’s events and draw their own conclusions.‘

Douglas placed both hands over his head, frustrated. ‘You don’t have to do that! It’s not like I was…‘

His gaze landed on Sharon.

He shoved her away. ‘It’s her! She came on to me! Like what she tried to do to that other guy tonight! She’s the one who should be fired!‘

Darya said nothing.

Douglas was more naïve than she thought.
