From the moment they entered the village, the villagers watched them curiously, especially noting the Pan family’s clothing and demeanor. While the villagers observed them, the second aunt also looked around with great interest.
Born and raised in the city, this was her first visit to a small village. Although she often traveled with her husband during his business trip, their destinations were usually cities or towns.
As they passed an old banyan tree, a group of villagers chatting and playing chess noticed Father Li. One of them called out, "Old Li, you are finally back!"
Recognizing his friend, Father Li waved and nodded, "Aye, Old Wang! I just arrived this morning."
Sensing his weariness, the friend added, "Oh, welcome back. Then you go back first. We will talk another day."
"Alright," Father Li replied with a smile.
When they reached Father Li’s house, Han Yuheng parked the tractor on the roadside while Li Chenze and Zhang Ermu drove the bicycle and bullock cart into the yard.
Not long after they climbed down from the bullock cart, Dong Huang’s excited voice rang out from the house, "Father! Mother! Brother!"
Turning around, Lu Jueyu saw her daughter running toward her like a small deer. She opened her arms to catch her, but before the little girl could reach her, Li Chenmo scooped her up.
Holding his daughter in his arms, he said gently, "Xiao Huang, don’t rush to your mother like that. She can’t carry you, and both of you might get hurt."
Dong Huang giggled at her father’s words while hugging his neck. She nodded and said, "Father, welcome home!"
Seeing her bright smile, Li Chenmo sighed, pinched her cheek, and asked, "Did Xiao Huang behave while Father and Mother were away?"
Dong Huang nodded and said earnestly, "Father, Xiao Huang ate well and slept well."
Hearing this, Lu Jueyu laughed and said, "Xiao Huang is such a good girl."
"Mother, I missed you! Why were you gone so long?" Dong Huang pouted.
"Mother missed Xiao Huang too," Lu Jueyu replied with a smile.
"How about I make your favorite braised pork tomorrow?" she coaxed her daughter.
At those words, Dong Huang’s eyes lit up. She slipped down from her father’s arms, hugged her mother’s leg, and said excitedly, "Thank you, Mother!"
Standing nearby, Mother Pan asked with a smile, "Jueyu, is this your daughter?"
"Yes," Lu Jueyu replied, then turned to Dong Huang. "Xiao Huang, these are Grandma Pan, Grandpa Pan, and Second Grandaunt. Greet them."
Although it was her first time meeting them, Dong Huang wasn’t shy. In her sweet, milky voice, she said politely, "Hello, Grandma Pan, Grandpa Pan, Second Grandaunt."
Her adorable greeting melted their hearts. The second aunt was especially taken with her and pulled a yuan from her purse to give her.
