"The price of grains has increased lately because most areas had failed harvests during the summer. The food shortage still hasn’t been resolved, so it’s normal for prices to be that high," Li Lingyun said casually.
"Even so, that’s too expensive," Jiang Ziyu added.
After securing the bags on the cart with a rope, Li Lingyun handed a bamboo bottle and two scallion pancakes wrapped in oil paper to his friend.
"My wife made these. Eat something to fill your stomach first. I will cook a meal for you when we get back to my house," he said.
Holding the food, Jiang Ziyu sat in the back seat and said, "I still don’t understand why your wife agreed to marry you, an old man."
Hearing this, Li Lingyun glared at his friend and reached out to snatch the food back while saying, "I see that you still have energy to talk and don’t need my food."
Before he could grab it, Jiang Ziyu quickly moved his hands and dodged. Opening the bamboo bottle’s lid, he took a deep breath and said, "Ah Yun, it seems your wife is a good cook."
As Li Lingyun pedaled the bicycle, he replied with a hint of pride in his voice, "Well, my wife is still learning."
Jiang Ziyu took a sip of soy milk before unwrapping the oil paper. The fragrance of peanut oil and scallion hit his nose as soon as he opened the package. Even though the pancakes were no longer hot, they were still warm and crispy.
As he bit into the pancake, the meat juice filled his mouth, and the savory flavor instantly awakened his taste buds. His eyes lit up as he chewed. Compared to the food sold in state-owned restaurants, this pancake was far more delicious.
After swallowing the pancake, he nudged his friend’s waist and asked, "Ah Yun, can you ask your wife to introduce a good girl to me later? Someone who can cook as well as she does."
When Li Lingyun heard this, he snorted and replied, "Do you think such a good girl is still single by now?"
Before his friend could respond, he added, "Even if there is a good girl with great cooking skills, do you think she would want to marry an old man like you and move to a faraway place?"
Hearing this, Jiang Ziyu frowned and asked, "What’s wrong with me? Aren’t you as old as me?"
Li Lingyun rolled his eyes and replied nonchalantly, "I live here."
With that brief answer, Jiang Ziyu was speechless. It was indeed hard to find a woman willing to move far from her family.
If a woman lived far from her parents or siblings, no one would be there to support her if she was bullied in her husband’s family. Because of this, most women chose to marry men from their own village or nearby villages.
Thinking about the women his parents had introduced back home, Jiang Ziyu almost lost his appetite. If not for the delicious pancake, he might have stopped eating altogether.
