She could hear Yu Baoyin mumbling, "Sis… Sis… Sorry."
The pain in her clouded eyes was evident to Nanzhi. Even in her unconscious state, Yu Baoyin struggled, unwilling to hurt Nanzhi. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Yu Baoyin collapsed onto the bed afterward.
That short exchange made Nanzhi stand up abruptly. She grabbed a backpack, wrapped Baoyin in a blanket, and hurried to carry her out.
What she hadn’t expected was that when she opened the door, she saw others carrying their unconscious relatives as well. Among them was Lin Yicheng.
Nanzhi swallowed a nervous lump in her throat. The little boy’s face was flushed red, his breaths shallow and weak. His hands clutched at the rough blanket as though seeking comfort.
The black veins on his arms and cheeks were unmistakable.
He struggled against the soldiers and her grandfather’s hands like a wounded puppy, whimpering in his sleep.
Sweetie.
Nanzhi’s heart clenched as she called out in her mind. She quickly moved over to him.
"My baby Chen…" The old man, Lin Weihao’s grandfather, as Nanzhi recalled, was desperately suppressing his tears.
"What happened to him?" Nanzhi asked, although she had an inkling of what it might be. Perhaps, deep down, she clung to the hope that it was just a simple fever.
The butler, noticing Nanzhi approaching, saw her as the one who had saved the young master and master from the car crash. His eyes softened, no longer sharp and guarded as before.
"Young Master has had a fever since lunch time," the butler explained.
Lin Jianjun noticed the butler’s growing familiarity with a stranger.
"Old Pan, let’s hurry up. We need to bring them to my grandson first." Lin Jianjun’s voice held urgency. His grandson had not yet arrived after telling him that he needed to wait for the blood tests, and he couldn’t wait anymore.
"Ah, yes, yes!" Pan Chen nodded quickly.
Nanzhi followed them, her eyes never leaving Lin Yicheng as he lay on the stretcher. Each time he groaned in pain, her heart felt like it was being pierced.
System, do you have any way to treat this?
[It’s a natural selection, a survival of the fittest.]
You can take my EXP.
[There is nothing I can do.]
Nanzhi’s expression darkened at the system’s cold response.
It wasn’t until she heard a familiar voice that she snapped back to reality.
"Grandpa!"
Lin Weihao quickly rushed to his grandfather’s side, snow still clinging to his shoulders from the hurried journey.
"You’re finally here!" Lin Jianjun exclaimed with relief. "Did the doctors find a medicine for the fever?"
Lin Weihao examined his mother and Lin Yicheng, rolling their sleeves to reveal the black veins. "They can take the mushrooms. Let’s go inside first."
"Where are you going?" Grandpa Jianjun asked, noticing Lin Weihao heading in the opposite direction.
"Wait for me inside, I still need to speak with your granddaughter-in-law," Lin Weihao said casually.
Granddaughter-in-law?
Baby Chen’s mother had already passed away.
And this stubborn grandson of his had remained single for so long. What was this nonsense about a granddaughter-in-law?
Grandpa Jianjun’s face wrinkled in confusion.
"Old Pan, am I hearing things? Did my grandson really just mention a granddaughter-in-law?"
"Old Master, you didn’t mishear it, I also heard what Master said," Pan Chen confirmed, equally baffled.
The two old men exchanged puzzled glances until they saw Lin Weihao approach the young woman who had inquired about Lin Yicheng’s condition earlier.
