"Helen!"
From where they stood, Nanzhi and Lin Weihao saw Helen Wu surrounded by a group of armed men.
Cho Jin was chasing behind them, calling out to Helen Wu. His pace was slow because of his injuries. "Helen! Don't go with them! Don't leave me behind!"
Helen Wu turned around and merely glanced at Cho Jin, who now seemed like a useless spare tire.
From where they stood, Nanzhi and Lin Weihao could clearly hear her words.
"Officers, I don't know him. He's been following me ever since he found out I have a water-based ability! He wanted to force me to produce water for him, and when I refused, he beat me! Look at my wounds, officers! They were caused by him! Hu hu... Please... I don't want to go with him! Can you help me?"
Half of Helen's face was swollen, and it looked ugly as she tried to act. But because her ability was valued, the officers didn't hesitate to step in and help her.
Cho Jin stood in disbelief. He never expected such words to come from Helen Wu. He had never forced her to do anything! He had always been considerate and had cared for her. She had the best treatment and share in the group!
"What do you mean 'you don't recognize me'? Helen, take it back! I never beat you! I even got injured trying to save you from a mutated tree last night!"
The crowd gathered, watching the drama unfold. But none of them offered help, merely discussing the performance amongst themselves.
Helen could feel the spiteful gazes thrown her way. In situations like this, the most pitiful figure often receives the most sympathy!
Moreover, with the few retainers and base management, most people living in the base didn't have a good opinion of the Longmen Boss.
Since Helen Wu was aligned with the Longmen Boss's guards, the crowd sympathized with Cho Jin.
Though their thoughts remained unspoken, Helen could feel the hostility and accusation in the eyes of the people around her.
She gritted her teeth. She would remember their faces! Talk bad about me if you want, but if you think you can seduce the base leader, could you still talk about me? Hah!
Nanzhi turned her gaze away. She had seen this kind of thing too many times in the past, and she was tired of it.
Cho Jin had made his bed. Now, he had to lie in it. If only he had listened to Zhao Lin or used his judgment properly, this situation could have been avoided.
The two still had other places to go.
Lin Weihao and Nanzhi had no intention of staying to watch the drama. Out of the corner of her eye, Nanzhi noticed Wu Hao hiding amongst the crowd. He must have been waiting for the guards to disperse before making his move.
The two didn't find anything of value in the market. They left.
Heading out, the sound of sirens rang out, and the people on the road stopped, stepping aside as if to make way for someone.
They blended into the crowd. Their black face masks hid their identities.
Not long after, a procession appeared, with eight people carrying a palanquin made of bamboo and draped with yellow and red silk.
As the palanquin drew near, the stationed guards lined up along the streets and shouted in unison, "The Emperor is back! Hear ye! Hear ye! The Emperor is back!"
Nanzhi's lips twitched.
She felt as if she had traveled back to ancient times. This new boss must have watched countless historical dramas.
She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes.
A strong gust of wind blew by, and the silk curtain flapped.
The so-called 'Boss of Longmen Base' lounged in his palanquin, a mountain of flesh, silk, and arrogance. His massive form nearly overflowed the cushioned seat, his wide belly stretching the military coat with fur, the buttons threatening to burst. His thick fingers, each adorned with gaudy gold rings, drummed lazily against his stomach while one woman filled his glass with wine and another fed him cheese.
