"I’m sorry about our first life and... for failing to help you plan my murder."
Penny’s heart sank as she stared at the subtle smile plastered on Atlas’s face. She shook her head, hearing Zoren grunting behind her.
"No," she breathed out, her heart clenching. "No, no. Don’t — don’t let go. Don’t..."
"Penny," called Atlas, his voice ironically calm and reassuring. When their eyes met, his eyes squinted a bit as a shallow breath escaped him. "It’s okay. It’s going to be okay."
The person Penny spoke about in her previous life sounded like a very harsh individual. The Atlas from her previous life didn’t sound like him at all. Even so, if that was true... Atlas was slightly appeased in knowing that, in a way, he could correct that behavior.
Because in this life, he only had one goal: it wasn’t to lead Global Prime Logistics or the Bennet clan to new heights. It wasn’t even to gain a title or legacy, like most people in his position might strive for. Not a woman, marriage, or family of his own.
All he wanted in this life was to watch his siblings live a healthy and happy life—a life full of contentment, full of fearlessness because they knew they had a fallback. In this life, that was all he wanted: to be a good older brother to Hugo, Slater, and Penny — and now to Zoren as well.
It might not be enough to appease her or take away the pain he had caused, but knowing she would live was good enough for him.
"Penny," Atlas spoke again, peeling his fingers from her. "Let go."
"No!" Penny yelled back, her grip tightening even more. "No! Don’t be stupid!"
"We’re going to fall!" he yelled back, but Penny just kept shaking her head while yelling, "No!"
Clenching his teeth, Atlas gazed down at the person clinging to his ankle. He tried kicking him once, but to no avail. Looking up, Atlas felt his heart leap when they fell another inch.
"Penny!" he shouted, carefully trying to peel her fingers off of him. "Let go! We’re not going to make it!"
"I said I won’t!"
"Penelope —" his breath hitched when a droplet of water fell on his cheek. His eyes widened as another tear landed on his cheek. His mouth quivered as he saw the pool of tears covering her eyes.
"I’m not letting go," Penny breathed out. "Please... don’t let go. Don’t let me go this time. Not in this lifetime, not in the next."
The strong facade he had worn, thinking he didn’t want his sister to remember the fear in his eyes, slowly crumbled down. His heart clenched as the redness in his eyes worsened. However, fear still didn’t show in his eyes. He wasn’t scared of falling from this height anymore, but rather, there was just a sense of panic seeing her cry.
Feeling a lump in his throat, Atlas bit his lower lip and hummed.
"Penny...!" Suddenly, Zoren yelled as his fingers on the seat footing slid. He tried pulling her back, but to no avail. ’No, this can’t be...’
