A stifling silence fell over the restaurant as no one spoke after Zoren’s remark. After all, everything he said was true. They had all dropped everything just to be here. Not that they resented Nina and Finn for it—this was more important than anything else.
It was a family matter, and family came first.
So, yes, they wouldn’t see eye to eye with Mr. and Mrs. Davis because if they could, how could the two of them couldn’t?
Finn gulped, scanning the faces around the table. It was clear that none of them were satisfied with his parents, and he understood why. But if both the Bennet and Cortez families were repelled by them, wouldn’t that put him and Nina in a difficult position?
Worse, would they refuse to allow this marriage?
Finn knew their opinion mattered greatly to Nina. Therefore...
He turned to her, only to find her also studying everyone.
’I...’ His thoughts trailed off as his fists trembled. "I’m sor—"
"Finn."
Charles spoke again, cutting him off. Finn stopped, watching as Charles kept his attention fixed on his future in-laws.
"Answer me honestly and without hesitation," Charles said, his tone grim and firm. "Do you love my daughter?"
Finn’s brows rose in surprise. His voice came out with a slight tremor. "Y-Yes!"
"What?!"
"Yes, sir!"
"Then, you’d better make sure you follow through with everything you’ve promised." Slowly, Charles shifted his gaze to Finn. "Do not hurt her. Make her happy. And, most importantly, protect her—even from your own family. Nina might give you a hundred chances, but I give you just one. Only one. Don’t screw it up. Make things right, this time, do not fail."
"Mr. Bennet, that is our son you’re threatening," Mrs. Davis snapped, recovering from her shock. "Don’t you dare—"
"He is not only your son now," Charles interrupted, casting the couple a cold glare. "From today onward, he is also my son. And I will be his father when he needs one... and even when he doesn’t. So the two of you — leave. My children, my family, do not welcome those who hurt one of us."
Silence.
The couple was speechless. So was Finn, who stared at Charles blankly.
Confusion flickered across Finn’s face. Had he just heard Charles Bennet call him son? Shouldn’t this be the moment Charles voiced his objection to the marriage?
