"What’s wrong?" Hayley arched a brow, noticing the other two—Shawn and Teddy—looking distracted. "You guys have been off since earlier. Are you that worried about Miss Penny?"
Teddy and Shawn lifted their eyes and locked gazes with her.
"It’s nothing," Teddy said dismissively.
Hayley clicked her tongue and cast Shawn a look, her curiosity growing at their lack of response. Knowing Teddy wasn’t one to reveal much easily, she cleared her throat and scooted a little closer to Shawn.
"Miss Rogers, you do understand that Miss Penelope is injured, right?" But before she could press further, Teddy’s cold voice interrupted.
"Don’t pressure Shawn. Let him work."
"Tss." Hayley frowned and cast a look at Shawn.
He offered a brief smile before lowering his head again, focusing on his work. He had already let one thought distract him, and he couldn’t afford to let it happen again.
Hayley clicked her tongue and pulled her chair back. Still, her curiosity was piqued.
I wonder what that is?
Despite her intrigue, Hayley decided to resume her work, knowing there would be other chances later.
As planned, when Patricia had her first coffee break, Shawn had to step in and replace her, just in case Penny needed anything. They didn’t want to force Penny into leaving her office unnecessarily, so being considerate of her was the least they could do.
"Tsk." Hayley clicked her tongue again, watching as Shawn left the office. She glared at Teddy, but he was already getting up to take a break.
It was slightly tricky to find the right moment with Teddy around, but it wasn’t impossible.
Time passed, and Patricia, who had been stationed right outside Penny’s office, returned to their department.
"Teddy, the boss is calling for you," she announced. "She wants you to bring some of your references. She wants to talk about the project you’re working on."
Teddy nodded, and Patricia quickly left. Teddy picked up the things he needed for his short meeting with Penny, but not before glaring at Hayley.
"Don’t do anything," he warned, before turning to Shawn. "Let me know if she pressures you into anything."
Shawn pressed his lips together and nodded, watching Teddy leave.
"Tss..." Hayley clicked her tongue again, her gaze following Teddy’s retreating figure until he disappeared.
As soon as he was out of sight, she jumped from her seat and rushed to Shawn’s desk. Shawn flinched in surprise, looking up at her with wide eyes.
"Wha — what?" he stuttered.
Hayley smiled slyly. "Shawn, it seems you’re forgetting I’m your partner, not Teddy. Want to grab some coffee?"
"..." Shawn pressed his lips together. "Hayley, didn’t you hear Ted—"
