Doubting Penny would rescue the day was justified by both Hayley and Theo. Perhaps, even by Patricia.
Why?
Because if the situation were reversed, they didn’t think they would want to get involved.
This situation wasn’t just about buying a company or hiring assistants. This was a crime, no matter how one twisted the narrative.
Besides, they all knew that Penny wasn’t the hero type. If anything, she might as well be an anti-hero.
Penny had already helped the Miller Company, regardless of how the Millers treated her in the beginning. She also hired Patricia, even when the latter was not qualified. As for Hayley, she had already earned an early mercy by being given a chance for the interview.
What else could they ask of her?
Thus, when Theo opened the door and saw the person standing outside, his knees buckled. His front bravado quickly melted as he sagged against the doorframe.
"Penny," he whispered. Theo could swear he had never felt so emotional in his life. The corners of his eyes reddened as his breathing grew heavier.
Penny, unfazed by the mix of relief and all sorts of emotions in his eyes, looked at him coldly. "Let me in."
"..." Theo nodded but had to force himself to stand on his own.
Pushing himself away from the doorframe, he opened the door slightly wider. As soon as Penny walked in, he peeked his head out and checked from left to right. There weren’t any other cars parked on the street—no police mobiles or anything like that.
It slightly put his heart at ease, but not completely.
Closing the door behind them and locking it just to be sure, Theo gazed at Penny’s back.
"Where are they?" Penny glanced back at him, catching the drying blood on the side of his head. "You should get that checked. I’m calling one of my men in here to clean it and maybe stitch it up."
Theo nodded without protest.
"Where is she?" she asked, not beating around the bush. "The new maid you think you killed."
His mouth quivered as he answered. "In the bathroom. She’s bleeding, so..."
"Where’s the bathroom?" Unfazed by his clear horror, Penny asked.
Theo pressed his mouth into a thin line, pointing in a direction. Slowly, Penny followed where he was pointing and, without a word, marched toward the door.
At the same time, Patricia and Hayley peeked out from the kitchen. When they didn’t hear any yelling from outside, but rather Theo talking, they tried to listen carefully. The moment they heard Penny’s faint voice, they quickly knew she had come to their rescue.
"Miss Penny..." Hayley whimpered. Now, the tears she had been holding back began to flow freely.
Penny stopped in her steps and glanced at Patricia and Hayley. She briefly studied their reactions, not surprised by it, as they should be scared.
Hitting someone in the head was one thing, but keeping the body in the bathroom? Jail.
