[Minutes Earlier...]
"What?" Jonathan frowned as he stepped out of the bathroom, phone pressed to his ear. "She got out?"
"Yes. It seems she changed her lawyer, and the new one forced the judge to recuse himself," said the person on the other end of the line. "The move was too abrupt for us to stop."
Jonathan’s face darkened as he asked the most obvious question. "Who’s the new lawyer?"
"Her name is Grace. Not even a defense lawyer, but a corporate lawyer. She handles all legalities for Prime Group."
"..." Jonathan’s jaw tightened, his grip on his phone trembling.
Penelope, it’s you again.
He swallowed the rising tension in his throat and exhaled sharply. "Never mind her. Getting bail doesn’t mean she’s out of trouble. Keep monitoring the situation at the Information Center."
"Yes."
Clack.
His frown deepened as the call ended. Glancing at his phone, he scoffed.
"That woman..." he hissed, his eyes gleaming malevolently.
Jonathan resumed his steps, tossing his phone on the bed and drying his hair with a small towel. He sat on the edge of the bed, letting the towel rest on his head while his arms draped over his legs.
"Penelope," he whispered. "... Grace."
No one knew it, but Jonathan was one of the few people who had followed Penny’s case from start to finish. Not because it was entertaining, but because he had to keep a close eye on it.
And since Jonathan was more involved with the Pierson Corporation than anyone else in the past, he knew the names in the legal department. Grace — that woman had never appeared on the list. And given Grace’s role in handling large companies besides Prime Group, Jonathan was even more appalled by her existence.
Where had Grace been in his previous life?
"There are only two things that could explain it," he muttered to himself. "Either she died, came back with her memories, and changed her life."
He nodded to himself. That explanation made sense. After all, the perks of going back in time with memories of future events were invaluable. Just look at Penny, a self-proclaimed genius. Jonathan had exploited that to manipulate events to his favor as well.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Grace, one of the most high-profile lawyers in their field, had done the same.
If not that, then he could only think of... Penny.
"That lawyer got her big break by closing Prime Group," Jonathan murmured. "Her name started gaining visibility after that."
Either Penny had seen Grace’s potential in their past life and gave her a chance to shine, or... Penny created Grace.
If not her, someone else would have to take her place, he thought.
If I didn’t put her in that place, Penelope Bennet... is gonna be in there. His thoughts twisted, though his intention was far different from the words his mind spoke.
I don’t need that woman in there.
