Penny drove around the residence once, circling the high gates of Zoren’s home. She only stopped when she reached the back of the property. Standing before the fence, she cocked her head back, gazing up at the top.
"Are the prison walls really this... short?" she murmured, furrowing her brows. "Am I being dumb right now?"
She couldn’t tell if she had simply grown accustomed to the towering prison walls, or if these fences were genuinely lower than they used to be.
Shaking her head, Penny winced as a sharp pain briefly pierced the side of her skull. Once it subsided, she gazed up at the walls again.
Placing her hands on her hips, she ran her tongue along her inner cheek. "Now..." she muttered. "...how the hell do I get in there?"
---
Inside the residence, Zoren stared at his phone while walking on the treadmill. Despite taking all the vitamins Penny had suggested, he couldn’t sleep. It felt like every light bulb in his brain was switched on.
So, he ended up exercising past midnight, still staring at his phone.
"Still no word from her," he whispered with a sigh, putting the phone down as he pressed a button to stop the treadmill.
His casual walking pace slowed to a halt. Picking up the small towel draped over the handle, he wiped his neck and stepped off the machine.
In the corner of the room, Renny, who had been lounging with Chunchun, suddenly perked up. The panther rose to its feet so abruptly that Chunchun tumbled off its back, landing gracefully on all fours. Chunchun rushed to the window, leaping onto the sill.
Zoren paused, watching as the large black panther approached the window, while Chunchun sat on the sill. He raised a brow and tilted his head slightly to the side, curious about what had caught their attention.
When he saw the lights of approaching cars in the long driveway, he assumed that was the reason.
"They’re early," he muttered. "Guess they were already close when I told them to bring him to me."
In reality, Zoren’s people hadn’t arrived early. He had given them the order the night before, specifically telling them, "Bring him to me." So, that’s exactly what they were doing.
"Renny, it’s just Mark," Zoren said dismissively, walking toward the bathroom to freshen up. "Don’t cause him trouble."
Chunchun and Renny exchanged glances. In their minds, their father wasn’t just having an eye problem—he also had an issue with his sense of smell. How could he not sense their mother’s presence?
Poor hooman.
Renny gave Chunchun a look, and she responded with a purr. Chunchun then jumped down from the sill, following her brother to welcome their mother. With so many people entering the residence at this hour, they feared Penny might get lost. They figured they should help her.
"Hey."
When Chunchun and Renny reached the closed door, they stopped. Turning back to Zoren, who was half-naked in the open bathroom, they stared at him.
"No enemies," Zoren said firmly. "Stay here."
While gazing at him, Renny slapped a paw on the door.
"No," Zoren repeated as he approached them, only to stop by the bathroom door. "Stay there."
After giving that command, Zoren closed the bathroom door for a bit of privacy. As soon as he did, Renny and Chunchun exchanged glances once again.
Poor hooman.
