Chapter 440: Sleeping beauty

Penny grinned in satisfaction, staring at herself in the mirror attached to the back of the locker. She was wearing a nurse’s uniform. Why? Because she had just shrugged off some hoodlums she’d beaten after they tried to take the money she won from their bet.

"This is why nurses always look pretty," she muttered, gently smoothening the uniform that wasn’t hers with her palms. "I should’ve just chosen to become a nurse. Their uniforms make me look like an angel."

Penny reached for the ID and wore it to complete her look. Once she was ready, she looked around the locker room before tiptoeing her way out. She slowly peeked through the door, looking left and right, before jumping into the hallway.

She casually smiled at the patients and staff she passed by. However, when she saw the person at the end of the hallway, she turned around immediately.

"Uh oh." Her steps quickened as she noticed a janitor pushing his trolley toward her. She pursed her lips and snapped her eyes forward, avoiding any confrontation. Not that she was scared of them, but they were a troublesome bunch.

Penny was out to find Nathaniel, not to get held up by some rogues.

"Hey!"

Penny’s steps halted when she heard the man behind her yell. Seeing the few people in the hallway, she kept moving.

"Hey, you!"

She took a deep breath, listening to the sound of footsteps approaching. Her jaw tightened as her eyelids drooped, ready to fight or run. Fighting in such a crowded place wouldn’t hurt her, but it could affect the bystanders. Hence, she leaned more on running.

Just as Penny was about to sprint away, she heard the same person talking again.

Her brows slowly rose as she glanced over her shoulder. She saw the men talking to the janitor and sighed in relief.

’Damn it!’ she cursed, resuming her steps. ’Why won’t they just let me go?’

Since the men hadn’t recognized her, Penny decided to get as far away as possible. She didn’t have a specific destination in mind — all she wanted was to escape them.

After minutes of walking aimlessly, Penny’s attention snapped to the sound of the elevator dinging. She furrowed her brows and glanced at the elevator number above the doors.

’I didn’t know there’s such a floor in this hospital,’ she thought, stepping out of the lift.

Unlike the bustling halls she had passed previously, this floor was almost empty. Penny furrowed her brows, but thinking it was better to hide in a quiet place, she moved forward.

As she walked, she noticed another nurse’s station with only a few people there. She approached the station quietly, observing the staff. The nurses glanced at her but didn’t dwell on her presence, even though they had never seen her before.

"Ahem," Penny cleared her throat and absentmindedly reached for a chart. She glanced at it and smiled. "I’ll go check Mr. Pierson’s room."
