Penny didn’t need to look for Zoren once she was in the residence; the bodyguards around already told her where he was. Penny went straight to the dining room, where she was told she would find her beloved. Her steps halted at the entrance, her eyes landing on the man placing a plate in front of him while carrying another.
The table was set with a candlelit arrangement, giving a romantic vibe to the dinner he was preparing. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she leaned against the jamb with her arms crossed. Penny just watched him set up the table until he lifted his head in her direction.
"Are you simply going to stand there?" was the first thing he asked in a cool yet mildly, playfully seductive tone. "Come. I’ve been waiting for you."
She pursed her lips and pushed herself away from the jamb. "What can I do? You were such a sight to behold; I felt like I’d ruin the picture if I came in."
"Having you in it only completes it," he teased back, pulling out a chair for her. "Sit down."
"Well, thank you," she chuckled as she sat down. She had already had a bite with her brothers, but now she felt hungry again. As soon as she settled, she turned to Zoren, who was taking the chair at the end of the table on her right, still within her reach.
"Don’t tell me you cooked this?" she asked, genuinely curious.
"Would you believe it if I said I did?"
"It’s not that I wouldn’t believe you, but I’d be wondering how?"
He smiled. "I didn’t. How could I when I can’t even see clearly?"
"It’s alright." Penny winked. "I wouldn’t mind."
Although she wanted to encourage him by saying he would be able to see eventually, she didn’t want to pressure him. His vision problems were only an issue when dealing with his family. After all, regardless of their romantic relationship, from a professional standpoint, Penny knew just how devastating his current problems were.
After handling multiple cases involving well-known people in the past, she was aware of just how crucial Zoren’s medical records and health were. These pieces of information were usually kept hidden—one of the most confidential things a man of his standing needed to protect. However, since Zoren had been sick from the beginning, he had to be transparent about it just to qualify as a candidate for the head of the family. Even as the current head, he still had to disclose his condition to appease his supporters.
Family politics at its finest.
"I can hear your gears turning. What’s going on in your mind?" His calm voice brought her back to the present.
Penny smiled. "Nothing," she said. "Just a little distracted by some other things." She glanced at the table setting and smiled. "This dinner has already made my eyes full."
"I hope you like it," he smirked. "Your brother mentioned his dinner date with you, and although I’d like to take you out, it was a bit late. I need better plans."
"I’ll be looking forward to it." Penny smacked her lips as she picked up her cutlery, grinning as a playful thought crossed her mind. "Though, I have to warn you, after that dinner date with my First Brother, my standards shot through the roof. I’m not trying to pressure you—I’m just saying."
