The hum of morning coaxed Zoren from his slumber. His eyes immediately caught the person lying beside him, smiling peacefully as he listened to Penny’s deep breaths.
"Good morning," he whispered, planting a soft kiss on her cheek, which earned him a short hum. "Sleep some more. It’s still a little too early."
Penny partially opened her eyes and smiled at him before falling back asleep. He idled with her for a while, cuddling her in his arms and inhaling her scent as if to energize himself to start the day. After another half hour of idling, he carefully slipped out of bed so as not to wake her.
This had been his routine since she moved in with him.
Waking up as usual and going through his morning rituals was not something new. The only difference now was that his reason for sticking to his schedule was that he didn’t want to do anything else once she was awake. He found all of this a little distracting when he could have spent more time with her in the morning.
This particular morning, though, he wanted to prepare her a healthy breakfast. After their activity the night before, he knew he had sort of tired her out. With that thought in mind, Zoren went downstairs after showering and changing into a suit.
Much to his surprise, when he reached the dining room, there was an unexpected guest.
Slowing down his steps, Zoren squinted at the figure sitting alone in the dining room. The aroma of coffee assaulted his nostrils, telling him that this was what the person was drinking.
’This person...’ he assessed the figure’s build and the way he held the cup, as he couldn’t recognize him with just one glance. "Second Brother, what a surprise."
Hugo smiled as he put down his cup, watching Zoren walk in. "Your men were so kind in letting me in."
"You’re my wife’s brother, so you’re always welcome here." Zoren stopped a few steps from the table, smiling. "What do I owe this visit?"
"Well..." Hugo leaned back before lazily getting up from his seat, standing tall, his eyes on Zoren. "My dad asked me for a favor, saying if you’re going to protect my sister, you’ve got to learn how to protect yourself."
"I know how to protect myself."
"I am aware."
"Yet, you’re still here."
"Yet, I am still here."
Zoren chuckled faintly. "Meaning?"
"I have to make my father proud." Hugo nodded. "Even if you know how to protect yourself, he needs you to be perfect. Quite pressuring, isn’t it?"
"It is."
"What should we do then?"
"Well..." Zoren trailed off, his shoulders slumping a little as he shrugged. "... we listen to the elder. Moreover, you once told me you’d help me exercise my bones. As long as I get out of it alive, I don’t see the problem with it."
Hugo nodded, grinning. "Great! I thought I would have to convince you."
"It’s an honor that the youngest lieutenant in the country would offer this to me. I feel blessed."
"You’re not blessed." Hugo shook his head. "You’re lucky."
"I am, indeed."
