"That Mr. Pierson he mentioned... is Zoren Pierson."
Nina’s expression grew solemn as she squeezed Penny’s hand tighter. Penny furrowed her brows in confusion.
"Penny, I know this sounds unbelievable, but it’s true!" Nina exclaimed before Penny could respond. "When Aunt Jessa slipped and mentioned your husband’s name, I was surprised. After all, I know that Patricia and Zoren Pierson were in a relationship."
She paused, staring at Penny’s shocked face. "The Pierson family is big, but I’m sure it’s Zoren Pierson."
"I’m sorry. I didn’t want to tell you this, but after hearing the clerk again and seeing that black card, I’m certain. That Mr. Pierson isn’t just any other member of the Pierson family—he’s the head of the family," Nina continued. "That’s why Mrs. Miller and Patricia acted that way. They expect Mr. Pierson to propose to her, with all the gifts he’s sent her. Most shops already know about them."
Nina pressed her lips together, looking at Penny with conflict. Penny’s expression was blank—vacant. She just stared at Nina, still in shock. Nina didn’t let go of her hand, knowing that once Penny processed this overwhelming information—God, she couldn’t imagine what would happen.
Not just Penny, but their brothers and even their parents would be devastated when they found out. Penny was such an important part of Nina’s and everyone’s life.
"Goodness... I want to strangle him," Nina blurted out, hissing angrily, as if she were the one being cheated on. "Penny, I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to say this, but I couldn’t stomach the thought of someone taking advantage of your good heart. I couldn’t sleep at night thinking about it. So, even if it hurts you, I had to tell you."
At this point, Nina’s eyes were teary, her heart already heavy with grief for Penny. She wanted to embrace her tightly but hesitated, unsure if Penny had fully processed everything yet.
"Nina." After a long silence, Penny finally spoke.
"Yes?"
Penny blinked slowly, furrowing her brows. "Is this why you came to see me?" she asked, and Nina nodded.
"I’m sorry, Penny," Nina repeated. To her surprise, Penny’s lips curled into a small smile.
"Pfft—" Penny tried to stifle her laughter but couldn’t. "Hahaha!"
"Penny?" Nina frowned, watching Penny burst into laughter. She opened and closed her mouth, confused. "Penny, are you okay? Why are you laughing—did you snap?!"
The thought that this news might have broken Penny’s sanity sent a wave of panic through Nina. She quickly jumped from her seat, grabbing Penny’s shoulders, her eyes wide.
"Penny! Penny! Are you okay?!" Nina shook her, but that only made Penny laugh harder. "Penny! It’s okay! Don’t lose your mind, please! He’s just a man!"
Penny had promised she wouldn’t die without him, but she hadn’t said she wouldn’t lose her mind!
The diners in the restaurant couldn’t help but turn and stare at the commotion. They frowned, watching Nina shaking Penny as she laughed uncontrollably. There were only two of them, but it looked like utter chaos.
"Penny! Pen—" Nina nearly bit her tongue when Penny suddenly snapped her eyes to her. "Penny, are you okay?!"
Penny chuckled, placing a hand over Nina’s. Before she could respond, a waiter approached their table.
"Miss, is everything okay?"
Both Penny and Nina turned to the server. His presence made Nina realize the scene they had caused. She froze, looking around at the onlookers.
"Heh..." Nina smiled awkwardly and quickly sat down. "I’m sorry."
"It’s okay. We were just having a little too much fun," Penny told the server apologetically. "We’ll tone it down. I’m sorry."
Nina huffed. "Penny, this is a crisis."
