"Kyahh!!!!"
The woman’s scream in the crowd echoed across every corner of the nightclub. Even after her scream, her voice continued to resonate as pin-drop silence followed. However, the silence didn’t last long because the next moment, everyone saw someone stepping in, followed by the loud noise of a body hitting the table.
For a second, everyone was stunned—flabbergasted.
Their wide eyes shook a little as they stared at Penny, who was still standing in the same spot. Their dilated pupils then moved to the two tall men standing near her, one of whom was bleeding from his hand. After a moment, they all shifted their gaze to the table where the loud noise had come from.
There, buried underneath the tipped table and some bottles and glasses, was Aiden.
"..." Everyone was once again stunned and silent, processing what had happened in the split second they blinked.
All they knew was that Aiden had managed to grab a shard and tried to stab Penny with it. And then, Aiden went flying across the area. Again, the crowd shifted their gaze at the two men standing near Penny.
"Huh?" Penny blinked repeatedly, confused. "What in the world...?"
Slowly, she lifted her gaze, and it quickly fell on Aiden, who was buried among the table and chairs. Her face contorted as she tilted her head to the side.
"Did I get superpowers in this lifetime as well?" she wondered to herself, recalling the shiny glint from the bottom of Aiden’s fist as he had tried to stab her. That guy had been so flimsy with it that even though Penny saw it late, she knew she could have dodged it or at least reduced the damage.
But the guy went flying!
"Penny!" Suddenly, Hugo’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts. When Penny looked up, Hugo was already standing in front of her.
"Shit," he breathed out, holding her shoulders. His irises dilated while his pupils constricted, his entire body shaking as the veins across his jaw protruded from gritting his teeth.
He didn’t need to ask whether Penny was alright. Her lips were cracked, the lower side of her jaw was slightly swollen, and there was also blood on her neck. Although the blood seemed to have just smeared on her neck, it was unforgivable.
Hugo breathed out once more, pulling her into his embrace. Even though his entire body was shaking and his blood was boiling, he wanted to console her first, just to make sure she knew she was safe now. To his surprise, just as he hugged her, Penny spoke.
"Not the back of my head," she said, as his hand hovered inches from the back of her head. "It stings."
"Huh?" Hugo furrowed his brows and gently touched the back of her head. The moment he felt the sticky liquid, he moved his eyes away and saw blood on his palm.
That. Bastard.
Slowly, Hugo released her, his eyes unblinking. He gazed at Penny with a blank expression, pulling her behind him protectively. Everyone who witnessed how he pulled Penny behind him as if to shield her had their faces twitching.
Pretentious!
