"Why don’t you just admit that you’ve done this alone? That’ll help us get a lighter sentence."
Sven’s heart sank as he stared at his lawyer with wide eyes, disbelief evident on his face as he tried to process what the lawyer was telling him.
[Are you sure you want to drag them into this?] frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
That question alone should’ve been enough for Sven to put two and two together. However, he was in denial and hadn’t paid attention to it. But now that the lawyer was being blunt, it was clear that this man hadn’t come to help him—he was here to remind Sven of the people Sven planned to implicate with him.
’I should’ve known.’ Sven hung his head low, feeling his strength slowly drain. ’When they made Allen’s incident look like an unlucky accident, I should’ve known they could do that to me too.’
If not for whatever Atlas did, Allen would have been painted as a greedy thief.
But with this?
Sven slowly looked up at his lawyer, who nodded at him reassuringly and encouragingly. He pressed his lips into a thin line, swallowing hard.
’Don’t tell me... they’re the ones who tipped off Atlas?’ he wondered. ’If they didn’t, then... how else would Atlas know about the plan tonight?’
Sven clasped his hands together, nearly suffocating as he struggled to breathe amidst the thoughts swirling in his mind. Unlike earlier, when thoughts flooded his mind all at once, he felt his brain slow down and calm down out of dread.
’They’re the ones... who set me up?’ he asked himself, his brows knitting together. ’What if I don’t want to? What if I refuse to listen to him?’
Again, Sven looked up at his lawyer, who offered him a meek smile.
"Consequences," Sven blurted out under his breath. "You said there would be consequences. What are they?"
The lawyer sighed faintly. "Don’t you really know what they are?"
"They’re going to kill me?"
"Not just you, Mr. Bennet," he said meaningfully. "You’re smart, so I’m sure I don’t need to spell it out for you."
The implication was clear: silencing Sven wasn’t the only thing they would do to punish him. Worse, they would go after his family. Sven hung his head again, barely blinking. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it beating in his ears.
’Mom...’ he thought, picturing the only person who truly mattered to him. ’Dad... Pia...’
Although Sven had his differences with his father and sister, he didn’t hate them that much. They were still his family, after all. Before the humiliating charity event, Stephen Bennet had always been lenient with him.
