Chapter 825: he is a real artist

"Confess this to my first brother. He’ll know what to do."

For a moment, silence enveloped the room as Stephen stared at Slater in disbelief. "You want me to tell Atlas that I tried to... end the chairman?" By the end of his sentence, he had to whisper his words. "Are you out of your mind?!"

"Yes, I want you to tell him." Slater nodded. "Except for the part about me and that I told you to do this, of course."

"Why?" Stephen gasped. "Why would you want me to tell Atlas? Can’t you just help me yourself?"

"I can, but then again, it raises the stakes of getting my cover blown. I’ve already taken the risk and revealed it to you, just because I want you to trust me, even though there’s an easier way to handle this situation."

That easier way, of course, would be getting Stephen caught and arrested for what he had planned in his mind. It would also be simpler to silence Stephen, since Slater didn’t have much of an emotional attachment to him. If only Slater would think of all the bad things he could do to Stephen, it would be easier.

After all, he might be an agent, but that didn’t mean he was squeaky clean. Having dirty hands was necessary for this line of work.

But why was Slater taking the long road?

’In the past, the Bennet family fell, not just because of Penny, but because of our lack of unity,’ he thought, assessing the mixed emotions swirling in Stephen’s shaky eyes. ’It’s still strange that they’re taking this approach... but at the same time, it makes some sense.’

In the past, the person they manipulated was Penny. But because Penny had built herself a security empire and was untouchable in this timeline, they shifted their focus to Sven. Now, it was Sven behind bars, not Penny.

Even so, Slater knew that wasn’t the end of it. After all, when Global Prime Logistics declared bankruptcy because of the controversy, another company had risen in its place. If Slater could change that, it would be easier to concentrate the enemy’s attention on the Bennet family, instead of using another pawn in whatever plan they had to make things even more complicated.

’Unless, of course, that’s still their plan,’ Slater told himself. ’But then again, I joined Homeland Security for this very reason.’

"Are you sure?" Stephen asked after a prolonged silence. "Slater, are you sure about this?"

"Yes."

"What if your first brother gets me arrested?"

"He won’t."

"How are you sure about that?" Stephen gasped. "Don’t you know your first brother? The moment I tell him what I planned to do, he’ll call the cops on me!"

"He might, but he won’t." Slater shook his head. "I’m sure of that because my first brother has already caught on."

Again, Stephen gasped. "What? He already knows what I’m planning to do?"

"No, not that, but I’m sure he knows someone manipulated Sven," Slater replied reassuringly. "I can safely say I know my first brother better than you do, since I grew up with him. But I’m sure you know him well enough too. My first brother will know what to do if you confess this to him. Moreover, he needs to be aware of all of this instead of poking his nose somewhere else. Otherwise, this won’t work, and you’ll find yourself in a bigger and deeper hole than you already are."

"What does that mean?"
