After Florian managed to calm Scarlett down, she had passed out completely. Fortunately—well, for the first time, Florian actually felt fortunate—Lancelot had followed him. Without hesitation, Florian handed Scarlett’s unconscious body to him.
"Take her back to her room," he instructed.
Lancelot nodded but hesitated for a moment. "Oh, my prince, His Majesty has asked you to rest for now. He wishes to meet with you tonight in the garden."
’My prince.’ Florian’s thoughts lingered on the title. ’He’s been calling me that for days now... and it still bothers me.’
"Did he mention why?" Florian asked, still struggling with the awkwardness between them ever since he realized that Lancelot was attracted to him.
Lancelot merely shrugged. "He didn’t, but I assume it’s to discuss the results."
"Oh. Alright."
That meant only one thing—it was time for Florian to decide. Time to choose the winner among the princesses.
Returning to his room, he lay on his bed, intending to think things through, but his mind refused to cooperate. The image of Scarlett’s broken state haunted him, leaving him frozen, staring at the wall. He wasn’t sure what he felt—his thoughts were a void, his body unmoving. Perhaps it was exhaustion.
He didn’t even realize how much time had passed until Cashew informed him it was time to meet Heinz in the garden.
And now, here he was.
Walking through the garden, approaching Heinz.
The night air was crisp, cooler than he expected. It was his first time stepping outside at night, and he was taken aback by what he saw. Glowing flowers illuminated the paths in soft blues and purples. Small creatures with luminous wings flitted between branches, while tiny, glowing ants scurried along the ground, leaving behind trails of light.
And the stars—oh, the stars were breathtaking.
’The night sky here is absolutely beautiful.’
As he neared Heinz, he bowed his head out of courtesy. But his gaze flickered toward the center of the garden, where a tea set and an array of small snacks had been arranged atop a table. It looked oddly familiar—almost identical to the setup the princesses had used during their tests.
Curious, Florian spoke first. "Your Majesty, why are these here?"
Heinz, standing with his hands clasped behind his back, tilted his head slightly. "There is still one last person I need to test."
Florian frowned. "Huh? Who? Did we... miss someone?"
As far as he knew, there were only six princesses. Who else was left?
Then Heinz’s eyes locked onto his. The realization hit Florian like a punch to the gut.
"Do you mean me?"
Heinz nodded. "Yes."
"But... I’m not a candidate for queen. Why do you need to test me?"
"You’re still part of my harem."
Florian stiffened. "But... I’m not really Florian."
"Still doesn’t change the fact that the body you inhabit is part of my harem," Heinz replied smoothly, gesturing to the tea set. "Come on. Humor me."
’Humor him?’ Florian suppressed the urge to scoff. ’Haven’t I humored him enough by going through these tests in the first place?’
But he exhaled sharply, resigned, and stepped toward the table. He pulled out a chair and sat down, Heinz taking the seat adjacent to his.
"This doesn’t make sense, Your Majesty," Florian said, crossing his arms. "I already know you’ll act poisoned no matter what I choose."
Heinz smirked. "I know. That’s why, in your case, it’s the real deal. You have to figure out which one is prepared the right way."
Florian’s breath hitched. His eyes widened. "Is... is that wise? We’re in public, and I don’t— I don’t want to kill you."
"Then choose wisely."
Florian stared at him, stunned. ’Wow. And here I thought he couldn’t be more fucked up.’
A genuine sense of unease settled over him as his gaze dropped to the table. Two sheets of paper lay before him—each containing a different method for preparing the tea.
Swallowing hard, he reached for the first one and began to read.
