Gu Zi didn’t even get a chance to speak before Chen Yu jumped in, grinning as he declared, "Secret recipe? Nonsense! I’m telling you, this baby’s going to be a girl. Haven’t you heard the old wives’ tale? When a woman’s carrying a boy, she gets uglier, but when it’s a girl, she blossoms like a flower. Just look at her glow! I’m afraid you two will have to try for a second one after this."
He chuckled as he finished, though there was a trace of genuine sympathy on his face—mostly for his old friend Su Shen. The man was barely in his early thirties, had only just gotten married after years of bachelorhood, and was finally expecting his first child... only for it to be a daughter. A daughter! And knowing how head-over-heels Su Shen was for his wife, if she decided this was their one and only, then wouldn’t that brilliant genetic stock of his go completely to waste? No heir, no one to carry on the family name. It was downright tragic.
Those three kids Su Shen had helped raise over the years? Sure, they were close. But they weren’t his flesh and blood. And Chen Yu—ever the pragmatic traditionalist—couldn’t help but think: Gu Zi, as the legitimate wife of such a man with such an empire, really ought to give him a son. After all, human hearts are unpredictable. Those children might be sweet now, but who could say if they’d take care of their adoptive parents in the future? A biological son, now that would be a guarantee.
Chen Yu had fully expected Su Shen to feel at least a little disappointed. But to his surprise, the man actually lit up like he’d just won the lottery.
"Gu Zi, did you hear that?" Su Shen turned to his wife with a delighted smile. "Even Old Chen says it’s a girl. A daughter! That’s wonderful. One and done—we don’t need any more after this."
Gu Zi caught the odd look on Chen Yu’s face, and she could guess easily enough what was going through that old-fashioned brain of his. But really, his opinion didn’t matter. He was an outsider. There was no reason to get riled up by a few outdated, patriarchal remarks.
Besides, Su Shen still had business dealings with him. What mattered most was that Su Shen wasn’t like that—not at all. That thought alone was enough to keep her mood light.
She smiled and said simply, "Whatever you say."
Chen Yu stared at the couple, utterly baffled by their obvious joy. Were his eyes deceiving him? Did they actually want a daughter?
Unable to help himself, he blurted out, "Old Su, Gu Zi... if you only have a girl, what happens to your family fortune? Aren’t you worried someone else might swoop in and take everything?"
Gu Zi very nearly rolled her eyes. She wasn’t even going to grace that with a reply. But Su Shen, ever the gentleman, responded calmly, "I want a daughter. Son or daughter—it makes no difference. Our child will inherit our legacy either way. A daughter is just as much a Su as a son."
