Late-night snacks weren’t necessary.
Li Huan and Chen Jin had barely finished half a bag of sunflower seeds before they wobbled out with the dishes.
One look and, well.
They dawdled for ages, and all we got were shredded potatoes, tomato and eggs, and garlic prawns.
A few of the prawns were even charred.
Li Huan clicked his tongue: "I think you two must have already eaten your fill."
Third Young Master put down his chopsticks and said, "The door is over there; you don’t need any help finding your way out."
"Don’t be like that, I was just kidding." Li Huan hurriedly took the bowl and said sincerely, "Lin Zhiyi, thanks for the hospitality."
Perhaps it was because Li Huan was there, but Lin Zhiyi felt that the house didn’t seem so cold anymore.
She smiled and said, "Let’s eat."
Halfway through the meal, Lin Zhiyi took out her phone.
"My mom said they found the person who stole from her, and she’s been discharged from the hospital. She said New Year’s is in three days and wants me to see her. It’s good timing since I have some work to wrap up too."
"What work?" Li Huan couldn’t help but ask.
"The wedding rings for Third Young Master and Miss Sang are ready," said Lin Zhiyi indifferently.
Li Huan closed his eyes, almost wanting to slap himself in the face.
He quickly tried to make amends: "It’s totally normal for the Second Madam to miss you during the New Year’s holiday, plus, she’s been through so much. It’ll surely be comforting for her to have her daughter by her side."
After he finished speaking, Lin Zhiyi looked towards Gong Chen.
Gong Chen was as undisturbed as still water, as if the conversation about the wedding ring never happened.
"I’ll take you to the Gong Family’s place when it’s time."
Lin Zhiyi hmm’d in response.
The matter of the wedding ring turned the page as if it never existed.
After the meal, Li Huan left to return to the hospital.
Gong Chen received a phone call and was ready to leave.
As for who the call was from, they both knew without saying.
Lin Zhiyi walked him out to the door, and as she watched him get into the car, she suddenly called out to him.
"Third Young Master."
Gong Chen turned around, and Lin Zhiyi threw herself into his arms, stood on her tiptoes, and gently planted a kiss on him, like a dragonfly skimming the water.
This was the first time Lin Zhiyi initiated a kiss with him.
He was momentarily taken aback, his eyes darkened slightly, and he raised his hand to support her head, deepening the kiss.
After a moment, he stopped and it took him a long while to steady his breath.
"Go back inside, it’s too cold out here."
"Okay."
Lin Zhiyi turned and returned to the porch, watching him leave with complex and resolute emotions in her eyes.
Three days later, New Year’s.
Lin Zhiyi was awakened by the sound of firecrackers and fireworks, feeling somewhat nervous.
The man behind her seemed to sense her unease and held her even tighter.
She was taken aback for a moment, then turned to see Gong Chen.
He was dressed in pajamas, lazily leaning against the pillow.
Lin Zhiyi asked in surprise, "When did you get here?"
Didn’t he say yesterday that he wouldn’t be coming?
With his eyes still closed, Gong Chen’s voice was low and husky: "Two hours ago. You were sleeping, so I didn’t wake you."
Two hours ago?
Wasn’t that the middle of the night?
"You didn’t need to rush over here," Lin Zhiyi said softly, looking at him.
The next second, Gong Chen opened his eyes and met her gaze.
Both of them looked at each other for a long time without speaking.
He focused on her and brushed her hair gently with his hand: "Lin Zhiyi, Happy New Year."
Emotions welled up in Lin Zhiyi’s heart, and she smiled sincerely: "Happy New Year."
"There’s a gift for you on the dressing table in the walk-in wardrobe. I’ll sleep a bit more and take you to the Gong Mansion at noon."
"Okay."
Lin Zhiyi propped herself up but didn’t immediately get out of bed; instead, she spent some time gazing at Gong Chen’s sleeping face.
Suddenly, the man’s palm rested on the hem of her skirt, his voice deep and low: "Lin Zhiyi, it’s not good for your health to be a vegetarian for too long..."
Before he could finish, a pillow hit him.
"Shut up."
Lin Zhiyi got out of bed with a red face.
Gong Chen turned over with a faint smile on his lips.
After washing up, Lin Zhiyi saw new clothes, new jewelry, and a red envelope in the walk-in wardrobe.
She touched the red envelope and smiled faintly.
