“It’s good that you didn’t tell anyone. You have to keep this secret for me. I don’t want a lot to know.”
“Alright, got it. Don’t worry! I’ll let you know if there’s a good job going.”
“Sure, thanks.”
Lucy hung up and sat there blankly. She then picked up her phone and clicked on her account to check the balance.
Glancing at the measly four digits, she bitterly smiled.
No one in this world would have thought that an actress like her, who had received an award, of repute, and an up-and-coming talent invested by her company, only had a little over three thousand in her pocket!
Oh, the star-studded life of a major celebrity in the eyes of the public painted a different picture for her.
Lucy sighed. Just then, her phone rang.
Her complexion saw a change of color when her eyes feasted on the caller display.
Her finger rested above the disconnect button as she hesitated for long before finally deciding to take the call.
It was a hoarse and raspy male voice on the other end of the line.
“I thought you won’t take my call. I guess you’re not that cold and heartless.”
Lucy took strides to a secluded corner and muttered, “Why are you calling me?”
“Me? Well, I missed my good little girl and specially called to check in on you!”
Lucy angrily refuted. “I told you, I have nothing to do with you! Don’t call me your little girl. My last name is Katz and yours is Cecil. We’re not related by blood!”
The person faintly chuckled.
“Really? I brought you up for ten years, you know. There’s a lot of people that can bear witness to that. You’re my daughter and now that you hit it big, shouldn’t you help out your old pops?”
Lucy’s eyes were blaring red from fury.
“Didn’t I just deposit you money three months ago? Did you gamble again?”
The person’s voice seemed uneasy.
“No, I was... Just trying my luck. Who knew it’d be that bad?”
“I don’t have any money!”
Without a second thought, Lucy ran her mouth. “I told you not to gamble but you refuse to listen. You come looking for me every time you lose all your money. Do you think I’m a bottomless pit? I don’t have a penny to my name and even if I do, I won’t give it to you. That’s it. I’m hanging up!”
She then terminated the call.
The person called in a few times later but Lucy did not accept the calls.
Having completely lost it, she blacklisted the person’s number.
Within distance, Assistant Cherry walked into the room.
“Sister Lucy, what’s wrong? Why are you looking upset?”
Lucy immediately got a hold of herself and forced a smile. “Nothing.”
“Oh, it’s great you’re alright. Oh, right, I want to apply for a day off. Tomorrow is my mom’s birthday and I want to keep her company for the day, is that okay with you?”
Lucy paused before nodding. “Sure, it’s not a huge deal. You can take the day off tomorrow.”
Thankful, Cheery nodded with a smile. “Thank you, Sister Lucy.”
After getting off work at night, Lucy dragged her weary body back to the hotel alone.
She just got down the car when an arm reached out to cover her mouth and yanked her to a corner.
Lucy put up a fight but was unable to overcome the attacker, leaving her powerless as he hauled her to the corner.
The moment she was let go, Lucy wanted to scream but soon heard a familiar voice. “It’s me.”
