His blood flooded my mouth, rich and life–giving. The taste was indescribable–sweetness and strength and something uniquely Kaius. I drank slowly, forcing myself to take small sips rather than greedy gulps, mindful of Frost’s watchful presence.

When I felt I’d taken enough, I pulled away, licking the puncture wounds to seal them as I’d instinctively done before. An unfamiliar sense of power surged through me, filling the emptiness left by the demon’s removal.

Kaius looked surprised. “For what?”

“Everything.” I hesitated, gathering my thoughts. “I had behaved so foolishly; I wonder why in the world I thought to protect that thing.”

“It is not exactly your fault; you seem to really want a child,” he said, his voice gentle with understanding.

The words struck a chord deep within me. Yes, I had wanted a child–wanted one badly enough to convince myself that the demon growing inside me was something to cherish rather than fear.

“Kaius, I think we should… forget everything that happened in the past and move on. I just don’t want to w you, because I know, despite everything, I still love you and will always feel that way.” The confession came exchange had broken down the final barriers between us.

“You still left my clothes in there?” I asked, suddenly unsure.

“Of course, I knew you would need them when you came back.”

The simple statement caught me off guard. “So you did believe I would come back.”

“Yes, I did believe you would come back, and I was ready fo do anything, even if it meant getting on my knees and begging for your forgiveness like some pathetic, love sick puppy.” The vulnerability in his admission touched something deep inside me.

“I’m sorry, I was just so angry.” I had been–angry enough to leave, to make a bargain with Kieran that had nearly cost me my life.

“It’s in the past now.” He helped me from the bed, his arm around my waist supporting me as I stood on unsteady legs. “Can you

“I think so.” My strength was returning rapidly, Kaius’s blood working through my system like a powerful medicine.

The journey to our old chambers was slow but steady. Walking through the familiar corridors of Ravenhollow felt strangely like coming home.

When Kaius opened the door to our room, I was struck by how unchanged it was.
