With Thalia’s threat hanging over me and no way to tell Kaius, all while needing to secure my safety and prevent her from forcing me into terrible acts, I’d made a decision: I wouldn’t be alone again. Not even for a moment. If Thalia couldn’t get me alone, she couldn’t force me to do her bidding.

I’d spent the night forming this simple strategy. Stay with Kaius during the day, with Frost if necessary, and always within sight of others. No solitude, no vulnerability, no opportunity for Thalia to control me.

I smoothed my dress and examined my reflection. The concealer did its job–the bruises were invisible now. I’d chosen a formal gown despite the early hour, something appropriate for accompanying Kaius throughout his day.

“And where are you off too, looking so sexy?” Kaius’s voice startled . He leaned against the doorframe, watching me with appreciative eyes.

“I am in a regular gown; how is this sexy?” I turned to face him, feigning indignation to hide my nervousness.

“Well, you have to see yourself in the mirror and decide.” His eyes traveled over me slowly. “You’ve not answered my question.”

“Work. I’ll be going to work with you today.” I kept my tone casual, as if this were a perfectly normal request.

“You are free to come with me, of course, but is there a reason you choose to today?” His eyebrow raised slightly, curiosity evident in his expression.

“I just want to spend more time with you, but don’t worry, I’ll be on my best behavior; I won’t distract you.” I stepped closer, forcing a playful smile. “I could help with the mini–jobs or anything you want me to do.”

“Getting desperate, are we?” His tone was teasing, but his eyes searched mine.

“Yes, I am desperate.” The honesty of my response surprised even me

He studied me for a moment longer before nodding. “Well, if you’re sure. It won’t be very exciting–just meetings, negotiations, the usual Alpha work.”

“Perfect.” I linked my arm with his, relief washing through me. Phase one of my plan was in motion. “Lead the way.”

It was as boring as I imagined it to be. I sat in a corner of Kaius’s office, trying to look engaged as he and various pack officials discussed harvest yields, territory patrols, and upcoming celebrations. My mind drifted, though I maintained an outward appearance of attention.

“Earth to Elowen,” Frost’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I blinked, focusing on him as he stood before me. “Sorry… I was just lost in thoughts.”

“You don’t seem to be having fun.” He perched on the edge of the desk near my chair.

“I knew fun wouldn’t be a part of work.” I gestured vaguely toward Kaius, who was deep in conversation with a senior guard.

“So, you want a dri Frost offered, clearly trying to rescue me from my boredom.

“Yes, I do.” I smiled gratefully.

“Kaius seemed to love working.” I observed.
