The Alpha’s Borrowed Luna

Chapter 262

I pulled Frost’s upper body into my arms, his lower half vanishing under the pile of debris. The dead weight of him sagged againas me as his breath hitched, shallow and ragged. Despite pressing down hard, blood continued to seep through his shirt, stating the

fabric dark.

Elowen, please listen to me. His voice was barely audible over the crackling inferno. I can’t make it, Elowen. You know that, but if you go, you can save yourself and save Kaius.

Please, Frost, we can make it alive, the both of us. Tears streamed down my face, cutting clean tracks through the sont and blood.! pulled his arm over my shoulder, trying to lift him, but my injured leg buckled beneath our combined weight.

We collapsed back onto the scorched earth, the heat from the burning building searing against our skin. Somewhere within that

hellish blaze, Kaius remainedif he was even still alive.

Look at me, Elowen,Frost commanded, his iceblue eyes finding mine with surprising clarity despite his pain. Kiss me.

The request caught me off guard. Through all our complicated historythe friendship, the loyalty, the night we’d sharedFrost had never asked for anything for himself. Even now, bleeding out on the ground, his first thoughts had been for my safety, for Kaius.

I leaned down, pressing my lips to his. The kiss tasted of blood and tears and goodbye.

When I pulled away, a soft smile graced his pale face. I love you, from the very first time I metHis voice faltered, a cough wracking his body. But you were never mine, and yet that didn’t stop me from wanting you. Don’t blame yourself for this; you,

Elowen, were the best thing that had ever happened to me.

But Kaiushe hates me.Fresh tears burned my eyes as I thought of how I’d destroyed everything between us to save him.

No, he doesn’t; reason with him; make him…. make him understand Frost’s hand squeezed mine with surprising strength. He loves you too much to hate you forever.

I glanced back at the burning building, torn between the man dying in my arms and the one who might still be trapped inside. But

you will die.

I’ve lost too much blood; I am only slowing you down. His voice was matteroffact, accepting in a way that broke my heart

further.

Please FrostI sobbed, clutching his hand tighter. Please don’t leave me; I beg you.

His eyes softened, and for a moment, I saw the lie form. I won’t. I’ll be right behind you. Go, please.

We both knew the truth. He wouldn’t follow. This was goodbye.

Please, do itfor me,he whispered, his eyelids fluttering as consciousness began to slip from him

I bent to kiss his forehead, his cheeks, his lips one final timea desperate attempt to memorize the face of the man who’d always

been there for me, who’d never wavered in his loyalty or his love.

I love you, Frost,I whispered, the words choking me. I should have told you sooner.

A peaceful smile touched his lips, but his eyes had already closed, his breathing more erratic now. I gently laid his head down, my hands lingering on his face for one final moment before I forced myself to turn away.

The building’s main structure had begun to collapse, great beams of timber crashing down as the flames consumed everything. I had to find Kaius now, or it would be too late. Frost’s sacrifice couldn’t be for nothing.

Chapter 262

I extended my wings, ignoring the searing pain as the heat scorched their sensitive membrane. Flying through the burning wreckage was suicide, but I had no choife. I couldn’t lose them both.

Diving through a gap in the collapsing roof, I plunged into the inferno, the smoke immediately choking me, the heat nearly unbearable even for my changed physiology. I called Kaius’s name, the sound lost in the roar of the flames.

Room after room revealed nothing but destruction, until finally, I spotted himsprawled on the floor of what must have been a laboratory, his body terrifyingly still beside the corpse of the elder, Caleb.

I landed beside Kaius, my heart freezing at the sight of the blade embedded in his sidethe cursed weapon that could strip a wolf of its nature. Black veins spread from the wound, a stark contrast against his ashen skin.

There was no time to check if he was still alive. The building was seconds from complete collapse. I gathered his limp body in my arms, my wings struggling to find purchase in the smokefilled air.

With one last, desperate glance at where I’d left Frost, I surged upward through the collapsing ceiling, Kaius’s weight straining my injured wings to their limit. The night air hit like a shock after the suffocating heat, clear and cool against my burned skin.

I didn’t look back as the building finally gave way completely, collapsing in on itself with a thunderous roar. I couldn t bear to see Frost’s final resting place consumed by flame.

Instead, I focused solely on Kaius, on getting him back to Ravenhollow, on ensuring at least one of them survived this night. The flight was agonizing, every beat of my wings sending fresh waves of pain through my burned and exhausted body. Kaius remained unnervingly still in my arms, his heartbeat so faint I could barely detect it.
