Frost moved to the window, potting some distance between us. The moonlight silhouetted his tall frame, casting light across his explode with energy at any moment, well–shaped hands as he rested them on the windowsill. Unlike Kaiu who seemed ready
Frost gave off the vibe of a sniper patient, precise, and deadly in his own way,
“The bond between me and Kaius is different and stronger than anything you’ll ever imagine,” he said suddenly, his voice taking on a more serious note. “It’s why he trusts me in these… intimate situations.
“I don’t understand,” I said, genuinely curious. “What kind of bond?”
He turned to face me, his expression thoughtful. “We are linked in ways few understand; the bond is a little similar to the mate bond, but not quite it. I can feel his emotions as if they were echoes of my own. I feel his desires; that’s how I knew he wasn’t just bypassing the tradition to anger his father.” His voice softened. “I felt his… protectiveness toward you.
I sank onto the edge of the bed, struggling to process his words. “That’s very strange; I had never heard or seen anything like that. Is this common among Alphas and their Betas?”
“No, you haven’t,” he confirmed. “And no, it isn’t common at all. What Kaius and I share is… unique.”
This explained so much–how Frost always seemed to anticipate Kaius’s needs, how they communicated with mere glances, how, Frost knew exactly when to intervene tonight. But it raised as many questions as it answered.
“Where is Kaius now?” I asked hesitantly. “After what happened…”
Frost’s expression closed off. “Do yourself this favour; don’t worry about him tonight. Some things are better left unquestioned, especially now.”
The warning in his tone was clear, but it only fueled my curiosity–and my growing unease.
A memory surfaced–Ophelia’s scarred face and her warning about Alpha mates seeking satisfaction elsewhere when denied. Had Kaius gone to another woman? The thought sent an unexpected pang through me. It shouldn’t matter–ours was a contractual arrangement, not a real mating. Yet somehow, the idea bothered me more than it should.
“I should go,” Frost said, moving toward the door. “You need rest. The marking takes a toll on the body.”
As if on cue, the throbbing in my neck intensified. “Will it always hurt like this?”
His expression softened with something like sympathy. “No. The pain fades, usually within a day or two. The… other effects might linger longer.”
“Other effects?” I echoed.
“The heightened sensitivity. The awareness of him. It’s temporary for most… for those who aren’t true mates.” He paused at the door. “Don’t fight it too hard, Elowen. Sometimes surrender is the kindest thing you can do for yourself.”
With that cryptic advice, he left, the door closing softly behind him.
Alone at last, I moved to the mirror, pulling aside the collar of the robe to examine Kaius’s mark. The bite was deeper than I’d expected, the imprint of his teeth clearly visible against my pale skin. It had already begun to bruise, a dark purple ring surrounding the puncture wounds.
I traced it gently with my fingertips, wincing at the tenderness. This mark declared to everyone that I belonged to Kaius Valerian–a visible sign of the contract I’d signed. Temporary, just like our arrangement.*
With a sigh, I changed into a nightgown I found in the wardrobe. The silk was cool against my heated skin as I slipped between the sheets of the massive bed.
