Seeing Sun Changze kicked into the river, Daohua’s body swayed, and Xiao Yeyang, standing by her side, quickly steadied her.
"Xiao Yeyang."
Daohua tightly clutched Xiao Yeyang’s arm, her hand shaking slightly.
She had not expected that the Provincial Governor would actually take Sun Changze’s life.
Xiao Yeyang, supporting Daohua, whispered, "Don’t worry, I’m here."
Upon hearing this, Daohua calmed her mind. When the boat reached the shore, she quickly disembarked, hurriedly bowed to the Provincial Governor, then ran toward the unconscious Dong Yuanyao.
Xiao Yeyang had been a great help in finding Dong Yuanyao so quickly. The Provincial Governor thanked him and, after exchanging a few words, prepared to take Dong Yuanyao back to the Dong Residence.
Daohua, worried about Dong Yuanyao, followed along to the Dong Family.
Yan Wenxiu and Xiao Yeyang had no choice but to follow them.
The Dong Residence.
As soon as Dong Yuanyao returned, she began delirium, burning up like a piece of charcoal; her mouth mumbled Sun Changze’s name unintelligibly.
The Dong Family members were simultaneously heartbroken and furious.
Old Madam Dong angrily glared at the Provincial Governor, "I wouldn’t stop you from punishing that Sun Changze, but why did you have to do it in front of Yuanyao? Isn’t this intentionally trying to kill her?"
At this point, the Provincial Governor also had some regrets. When he had found her, he was truly furious, not considering whether his daughter could be stimulated by his actions.
Madam Dong was by the bed, trying to cool Dong Yuanyao down and crying. She resented Sun Changze bitterly, and was equally furious at her own daughter for forsaking her parents and family for a mere outsider.
Daohua was helping to prepare medicine in the yard; once it was ready, she hurriedly brought it in, "Auntie, the medicine is ready. You rest for a while; I’ll feed Yuanyao."
Just as she was about to go to the window to administer the medicine, Old Madam Dong spoke out, "We couldn’t trouble Miss Yan with that. You are a guest, and it isn’t right to have you care for the sick. Be careful not to get infected. You should go rest in the guest courtyard."
With that, she signaled the maid to take the medicine from Daohua’s hands.
Daohua looked at Old Madam Dong’s indifferent face and distant attitude with shock.
Even Madam Dong, the Provincial Governor, and Dong Yuanxuan were taken aback.
But it was Madam Dong who knew her mother-in-law well and understood that she was displacing her anger. Wiping the tear marks from her face, she took Daohua’s hand and said, "Dear child, your aunt knows you are worried about Yuanyao. But we’re here to take care of her. You must be tired after the commotion all night. Let the maid take you to rest."
Daohua glanced at everyone in the room, and with some effort, she conjured a weak smile, "Then, I won’t cause any more trouble here." With that, she turned and left the room.
After she left, the Provincial Governor looked at Old Madam Dong, disagreeing, "Mother, what were you doing just now? Miss Yan from the Yan Family is also concerned about Yuanyao."
Old Madam Dong huffed, "Her concern — our family cannot afford such a luxury."
Madam Dong frowned, "Mother, what are you talking about?"
Old Madam Dong, with a face full of pain for Dong Yuanyao on the bed, said, "Our Yuanyao used to be a bit unruly and naughty, but for the most part, she was always mindful of propriety. She never did anything to disgrace our family name. This time, her daring to elope with someone—I suspect it’s because she was led astray by those who do not understand the rules."
Whether Old Madam Dong did it on purpose or not, her voice was loud enough for Daohua, who was nearly out of the courtyard, to hear everything clearly.
Daohua clenched her fist that hung at her side and hurried off with furrowed brows.
Xiao Yeyang and Yan Wenxiu, being outsiders, weren’t appropriate to visit Dong Yuanyao, so they sat in the courtyard waiting. Seeing Daohua come out, they quickly approached her.
Yan Wenxiu, "Big sister, is Miss Dong all right now?"
