Dong Yuanyao hadn’t been struck down by her family’s decline, and Daohua was very happy for her. Aside from some heavier topics at the beginning, their conversation had been quite lighthearted.
They chatted until midafternoon before rising to leave the tea house.
Daohua followed Dong Yuanyao towards where the Dong Family now lived. As they were about to arrive, Daohua stopped: "Well... I won’t be visiting your elders this time."
Hearing this, Dong Yuanyao smiled and nodded in understanding. She didn’t take it to heart, knowing Daohua was considering the sensibilities of her family elders. Throughout the months since the Dong Family’s fall from grace, whether it be her grandparents or her parents, none of them had really come out of it.
In Zhongzhou, because of the incident with her and Sun Changze, her grandmother had once taken out her anger on Daohua. Now that everyone’s social status had been diminished, her grandmother probably felt too embarrassed to meet Daohua.
Daohua gestured for Wang Manman and Bi Shi to take the gifts they had prepared down from the carriage: "These are some fruits and vegetables produced from our own estate. Take them back to taste."
Dong Yuanyao dispensed with formalities and laughingly had Hong Ying take them: "I haven’t had cherries and strawberries in a long time."
Daohua laughed, "If you like them, I’ll bring you more next time."
Dong Yuanyao smiled and nodded, then glanced at the sky: "It’s getting late. You’d better head back, don’t let your aunt and uncle worry."
Daohua: "Then, till next time." With that, she walked towards the carriage, but after a few steps, she turned back to look at Dong Yuanyao, seemingly hesitant.
Dong Yuanyao asked with a smile, "What’s the matter?"
Daohua hesitated for a moment, then leaned in and whispered to Dong Yuanyao: "Over these two years, I’ve been in contact with Sun Changze. After you returned to the capital, the Sun Family proposed a match for him, but he refused. He has been running up and down the Dayuan River. Do you want to see him?"
Dong Yuanyao was stunned for a moment, then gave a bitter smile: "Let’s forget about it. My father almost killed him back then. Now that my family is in decline, I can’t go back to him, what would that make me?"
Seeing that Daohua wanted to say more, Dong Yuanyao laughed: "I know you mean well, but I’m no longer the dazzling Dong Yuanyao I once was. I am someone whose engagement has been broken off, and I no longer have the right to his love."
Daohua frowned deeply, clearly disagreeing: "The broken engagement wasn’t your fault. If Sun Changze truly likes you, he wouldn’t care about that."
Dong Yuanyao smiled uncertainly: "Whether he cares or not, who’s to say?" Then, looking at Daohua, "Yiyi, there’s no need for you to worry about me. With my family in this state, I really can’t afford to think about love and romance."
Hearing this, Daohua had nothing more to say and turned to get onto the carriage: "I’ll come to see you next time."
Watching the carriage roll away, Dong Yuanyao and Hong Ying each carried a basket and entered their courtyard.
The Dong Residence was no longer what it used to be; they now lived in a modest quad space, with the old master and mistress occupying the main room, the eldest son’s family in the east wing, and the second son’s family in the west wing. The sideline children from other rooms lived in the adjacent courtyard.
"Hey, where did these cherries and strawberries come from? Let me have a taste! I’ve barely had anything good to eat these past months."
Eager to take Dong Yuanyao’s basket, the titular head of the family Dong Yuanshun immediately ran over.
Dong Yuanyao sidestepped, avoiding Dong Yuanshun with agility: "Second Brother, if you want some, go buy them yourself." With that, she walked into the west wing with her baskets.
Before the Dong Family had lost their nobility, Dong Yuanshun was indulged and spoiled by the Princely Heir’s Madam, his high-handed nature well known. Failing to get what he wanted, he immediately started shouting: "Dong Yuanyao, I’m your second brother. When I tell you to hand over food, how dare you refuse?"
Dong Yuanyao paid no mind to Dong Yuanshun in the courtyard. Because the second family was implicated by the eldest, Dong Yuanxuan couldn’t even sit for the civil examinations, and they resented the eldest family deeply. Although the Dong family had not divided, the two branches lived and dined separately.
The second madam, hearing commotion, walked out from her room and, seeing the array of fruits and medicinal herbs, smiled and asked: "Has your Elder Brother Yan come again?"
Dong Yuanyao shook her head and helped the madam sit down: "It wasn’t Elder Brother Yan, it was Yiyi."
