Chapter 169
“It really is a strong possibility,” Anthony said slowly, coughing weakly twice before he spoke.
Benedict blinked, clearly caught off guard. He frowned, puzzled. “Who would have the guts to kidnap Sophie?”
And more than that, Sophie had gone missing inside the Duke’s estate. Not just anyone would dare pull off a kidnapping there. Honestly, there were barely a handful of people in all of Hasen City who would even think about trying.
Anthony’s voice was calm, almost indifferent. “Half a month ago, someone showed up with the Black Flag and stormed the Duke’s estate. That happened, didn’t it?” Clearly, he was talking about Nolan.
But Gabriel shook his head. “It wasn’t him.”
Anthony gave a mirthless laugh. “And how can you be so sure, Father?”
Gabriel shot his sickly son a cold glance. “Nolan never pulls sneaky moves like this. If he wanted to capture Sophie, he would’ve come straight to our doorstep. Half a month ago, he openly searched the Duke’s estate. And before that, he barged in, all under the excuse of solving that case at the Marquis’s estate.”
Gabriel might have been at odds with Nolan for a long time, but that also meant he understood exactly how the man operated. Nolan did not hide behind shadows. Gabriel was convinced Nolan would never resort to backhanded tactics like this.
“Well, if you say it wasn’t him, then I guess it wasn’t,” Anthony muttered under his breath with a sharp, sarcastic edge.
Anthony’s tone was unmistakably disrespectful, and Benedict frowned again, this time visibly irritated. “Anthony, watch yourself. Don’t take your anger out on Father. What happened last time wasn’t his fault.”
Anthony whipped around, glaring. “If it wasn’t his fault, then whose fault was it? He’s the Duke, isn’t he? Since when do outsiders get to run our estate like it’s their playground?
“If Father had just gone to His Majesty directly, no matter how many men Nolan brought, he wouldn’t dare to do anything. We’re not the kind of people anyone can just walk all over, okay? Do you think His Majesty would really sit back and let him throw his weight around like that?”
Anthony coughed violently, practically choking on his own rage, pouring out all the fury he had been holding in.
Before the last word even left his mouth, Gabriel snatched the cup from the table and hurled it to the floor right at Anthony’s feet. Water splashed across the tiles. Porcelain shattered and scattered in every direction.
Gabriel’s expression was ice cold, his voice laced with menace. “That’s how you talk to me?”
