Matthew still believed Diana did that because Eliza said something to her.

“Do you think anything in this world can stay hidden? The disgraceful, shameless acts committed by people in Duke’s estate are hardly few. Everyone in Hasen City has already heard all about them. Did you honestly believe word wouldn’t spread beyond?” Eliza asked.

She let out a scoff, her patience wearing thin. “Enough with nonsense. My patience is limited. You either stand by and watch Sophie go to prison, or agree to break off the engagement.”

As she said that, Eliza’s gaze flicked briefly toward Gabriel, who had remained silent the entire time.

It was clear he had already seen through Eliza’s intentions for today. And he knew just as well that Eliza stood no chance against people of the Duke’s estate with a handful of worms. Since she couldn’t shake their power, Gabriel chose to stand by and watch.
