459.Chapter 459
‘Daring to scheme against my son? If Sophie didn’t suffer for it, it would be an insult to my status as the Marchioness!‘ A glint of malice flashed in Adeline’s eyes. “She can not be Caleb’s wife. Letting her in as a side wife might be acceptable.” If it weren’t for Caleb’s ridiculous infatuation, she wouldn’t even let such a disgraceful woman get into Caleb’s bed. “Mom, that’s not fair! How can Sophie settle for being just a side wife?” Caleb protested, his voice filled with frustration. But Adeline shot him a glare that could freeze fire. “She can either come in as a side wife, or she doesn’t step foot in this house at all!”
“No, Mom! I don’t want Sophie to be treated unfairly. Please, don’t do this to her!” Caleb pleaded desperately.
“You ungrateful brat! How did I end up with a son who sides with outsiders over his own family?” Adeline fumed, her hand landing on Caleb’s back with a loud smack.
If he weren’t her own flesh and blood, she might have been tempted to disown him right then and there.
“Mom! Dad! I’m begging you! I promised Sophie I would marry her as my wife!” Caleb clung to the fact that his parents doted on him, pleading with all his might.
“She wants to be your wife? In her dreams!” Adeline was livid, collapsing onto the seat beside Dale to calm herself down. Dale shot Caleb a frosty look. “Don’t forget what you just promised us. We’ll let you marry her, but the rest is up to your mother and me. If you refuse, then leave this house, go find your Sophie, and never come back to us again.”
“Father? Are you really going to kick me out?” Caleb stared at Dale in disbelief.
“It’s not about me kicking you out. It’s about your lack of loyalty to us!” Dale shook his head in disappointment. “All you care about is Sophie, and you haven’t spared a thought for this family. If you insist on marrying her, what will happen to the reputation of the Marquis’s estate?
“And your mother, don’t forget about her. You know she doesn’t approve of Sophie, but she’s been willing to compromise for your sake. Yet you refuse to budge even an inch! Are you really going to make your mother sick with anger, or worse, drive us both to our graves? Is that what it’ll take for you to stop being so ungrateful?”
The words hit Caleb like a slap to the face. He froze, panic flashing across his features. “No, Father, I didn’t mean to upset you! Mother, are you okay?”
Only then did Caleb rush forward to check on his mother.
If they wanted to use his son, then he had to make Gabriel pay the price.
