544.Chapter 544
Sophie almost tore her palm open, the pain nearly drawing blood as she struggled to suppress the fury she could no longer hold back.
She clenched her teeth and, after a long moment, finally spoke, “My mother lived in a place on a mountain, and the road there was steep. I lost my footing and fell… that’s how I got all these injuries.”
Adeline asked, “Is that so?”
Adeline listened but still questioned with suspicion, “Is that really how it happened?”
Sophie coldly smiled, her voice laced with ice as she replied, “What else would it be? What would you prefer it to be?” Adeline pursed her lips, saying, “Of course, I’d prefer that’s the case. But if I ever find out that you’ve wronged Caleb or the Marquis’s estate, I’ll make sure Caleb divorces you.”
A murderous glint flickered in Sophie’s eyes.
She spoke softly, feigning humility, “Don’t worry. Now that I’ve married into the Marquis’s estate, the only person I can rely on is Caleb. He is my husband, and I understand the concept of ‘united in glory, united in ruin. How could I possibly betray him?”
As she spoke, she stepped forward, gently touching Adeline’s coffee cup. “The coffee is cold. Please wait a moment while I make you a fresh cup.”
“Alright.”
Adeline nodded, somewhat satisfied with Sophie’s words, but as Sophie went to prepare the coffee, she couldn’t help but snort disdainfully.
Adeline said, “It’s good that you understand. As long as you’re obedient, take care of Caleb, and provide the Marquis’s estate with heirs–more children–I won’t make things difficult for you.
“But you must also understand, just having children won’t be enough. After all, Caleb is the heir to the Marquis’s estate, and he will need to marry a wife from a good family. When the time comes, you better keep to your place. If you try to fight for favor or play any dirty games, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Sophie thought, ‘A proper wife from a good family? This old hag is mocking me, mocking my status as a bastard? Fine, it seems I don’t need to hold back anymore.
With her back to Adeline, Sophie’s fingers brushed the edge of the coffee cup, and from her sleeve, a tiny insect slipped out, falling into the cup and sinking into the liquid, undetectable unless one looked closely.
After completing the task, Sophie carefully carried the coffee and slowly approached Adeline.
Sophie said, “Adeline, the coffee is ready…”
However, before she could finish, Adeline, who had been lecturing her earlier, stood up and said, “Forget it, forget it. I don’t want it anymore. I’ve said what I needed to. You can drink it yourself.”
Sophie thought, ‘Not drink it?
VO way.
She had already added the ingredients; Adeline had to drink it today.
Sophie frowned and reached out to grab Adeline, but just then, Caleb walked in from outside.
Caleb said, “Mother, are you done? You’ve been talking for so long. Father will be back from court soon.”
Upon hearing this, Adeline hurriedly said, “Oh yes, I need to go tell the kitchen. Your father has been working hard these days. We need to prepare his favorite dishes and a nourishing soup for him tonight, to help you and him both stay healthy.”
With that, Adeline rushed out.
Sophie stood there, coldly watching her leave. After a moment, she turned to Caleb. “Darling…”
