680.Chapter 680
“I swear, I wasn’t thinking much back then!” Adeline said with a sheepish smile, too nervous to argue. “It just looked like something from the Padilla family, and your mother was bedridden and looked so awful. I mean, I didn’t like her, but I never wanted her dead. I thought maybe showing it to her would cheer her up a little.”
“But before I could even do that, the whole estate went into chaos that day. Benedict flew into a rage and killed several servants. That’s when I realized I might’ve taken something way more important than I thought. But the bloodshed scared me so much, I couldn’t bring myself to take it out. I’ve kept it hidden ever since.”
Malaki could tell she wasn’t lying this time.
Now, she finally understood why her mother had treated Adeline so kindly back then, even going so far as to arrange her marriage to Dale.
Compared to Benedict, Adeline was a world apart.
Benedict was cunning and ruthless, willing to do anything to achieve his goals.
Adeline, on the other hand, was simple–foolish and selfish, but not cruel.
“For the emerald seal’s sake, and because Dale kept his word last time, I’ll help you,” Eliza said, her voice calm and deliberate.
Adeline’s eyes lit up instantly, her excitement spilling over. “That’s amazing! Should we head out now, or…?”
Eliza cut her off with a sharp tone, clearly annoyed. “Head out where? You want to barge into the Marquis’s estate and alert them?”
“But what are we supposed to do then? Your Grace, didn’t you say Dale and Caleb are running out of time? If we don’t go now, when will we?” Adeline asked anxiously.
Adeline was naturally impatient. The moment Eliza agreed to help, she couldn’t sit still for even a second.
Eliza shot her a piercing look and said firmly, “If you want me to save them, then shut up and follow my instructions. No more talking!”
Feeling wronged, Adeline clamped her mouth shut, forcing herself to suppress her growing anxiety.
“Alright, get up and wait here for now,” Eliza instructed.
She stood and disappeared into the inner room. Moments later, she returned holding a small box, no bigger than her palm.
“Open it and take a look.”
Eliza handed the box to her.

Adeline took it, her face full of confusion. She opened it, and then a spider, grotesquely resembling an eyeball, appeared before her eyes.
“Ah!” Adeline let out a terrified scream, flinging the box and the spider away in panic.
“What… what is the meaning of this?”
Adeline was furious, pointing at Eliza as she shouted, “Even if you don’t want to help the Marquis’s estate, there’s no need to mess with me like this!”
Eliza rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with disdain. “Idiot. This is for dealing with the parasites.”
“What?” Adeline froze, her face a mix of shock and disbelief.
Her face alternated between red and pale before she sheepishly bent down to pick up the wooden box. “Oh… so that’s what it’s for…” she mumbled.
“What, you think I’ve got nothing better to do?” Eliza shot back, her tone dripping with
sarcasm.
Silently chanting ‘Serenity‘ in her mind, she kept a straight face and lied without hesitation.
Across the table, Nolan’s eyes curved with amusement as he covered his mouth, clearly stifling a laugh.
. After teasing Adeline and venting a bit of her frustration, Eliza finally got serious.
“Just think of this spider as a parasite. Take it back to the estate and leave it in some hidden corner. That’s all you need to do.”
“Don’t worry about the parasites in Dale and Benedict for now. A day or two won’t make a difference. After all, Sophie can’t harm you right now. But there’s something else we need to address.”
“What is it?” Adeline asked, her face full of confusion.
