Gu Jiao’s emotions instinctively turned violent.
The goggles became a sheet of blood red, as though the entire world had turned the color of blood.
The heat of the blood seared her cheeks through the mask, and the violent factors within her began to churn endlessly.
Everyone was stunned.
Zhao Yuanwai was a plague patient, his blood... was infected too, and Doctor Gu, she...
The dark guards outside the barracks heard the commotion inside, and one of them lifted the curtain, only to see Gu Jiao covered in blood. His expression changed, and he started to approach her.
"Don’t move!" Gu Jiao raised her hand to stop him.
The dark guard halted in his tracks, "Doctor Gu, are you alright? What happened?"
"I’m fine." Gu Jiao slowly lowered her hand, a seemingly ordinary gesture, but no one knew how much self-control it took.
She calmly said, "None of you come in, Shen Xuan, step aside."
She always called him Little Shitou, it was the first time she called him by his name.
Shen Xuan subconsciously realized something was wrong with her.
"Doctor Gu..." He blankly moved aside.
Gu Jiao squatted down in front of Zhao Yuanwai once again.
Zhao Yuanwai was subdued by the silent calmness emanating from Gu Jiao’s body, he dared not move or make a sound.
He had been too forceful when removing the needle earlier, tearing the blood vessel.
Gu Jiao calmly and skillfully treated his wound, reinserted the needle, and said coldly, "The medicine is expensive, don’t force me to waste it."
She didn’t waste medicine unless the person was dead.
Zhao Yuanwai, watching her, who hadn’t shown a hint of anger from beginning to end, didn’t know why, but involuntarily shivered!
After coming out of the barracks, Gu Jiao found a secluded spot and sat down leaning against a bamboo.
She took off her contaminated goggles, mask, and a pair of gloves.
She didn’t know if she would be infected.
She took two capsules of Chloramphenicol from the first aid kit and swallowed them with a handful of cold snow.
The Gu Family army had gone to attack the city, leaving only a hundred people behind to care for these patients in the camp.
The forest was deathly quiet; however, to Gu Jiao’s ears, it was as if she could hear the sounds of war drums and bugles, the sounds of battering rams striking the city gates, the sounds of the Gu Family army scaling ladders...
She leaned against the bamboo, looking up at the vague and boundless sky, a hint of confusion appearing on her face.
For an instant.
Her mind went blank.
"Doctor Gu!"
A dark guard came over and reported, "Someone is coming!"
Gu Jiao entered a state of combat readiness in a second, swiftly standing up and softly asked while picking up her small backpack, "How many people?"
The dark guard said, "Twenty people, among them a few death warriors!"
It seemed that the remnants of the former dynasty had discovered the plague patients were missing and had sent people specifically to recapture them.
Gu Jiao had already made several plans. If no one came after them, they would wait here for Gu Changqing and the Gu Family army to return in triumph; if someone did chase them, they would move to a different location.
She had at least marked three alternate locations.
Gu Jiao said to the dark guard, "Take the patients and go to that broken temple on the way back."
"Yes!"
The dark guard only followed orders, never questioning Gu Jiao’s decisions.
The dark guard and a hundred of the Gu Family army transferred the patients.
This time, Zhao Yuanwai behaved himself, sitting in the carriage while Shen Xuan hung his IV bag on the carriage.
"Do you still remember how to remove the needle?" Gu Jiao asked Shen Xuan.
The first time she went to the camp was to give Shen Xuan a shot, and he nodded, "I remember."
"Good." Gu Jiao did not elaborate further. She picked up the Red-Tasseled Spear, slung the small backpack over her shoulder, and walked towards the direction from which the group of experts was coming.
"Doctor Gu!"
Shen Xuan called out to her.
"Is there something you need?" Gu Jiao turned back.
Shen Xuan sat in the carriage, poking his head out the window, and through his mask, he said to her, "You... you won’t be in any trouble, will you?"
Gu Jiao gave him a look, and instead of answering his question, she said, "If I don’t catch up within two hours, you all head to Yuegu City first, find a doctor with the surname Song; he knows what to do."
She had left Song the doctor plenty of medicine, including Chloramphenicol and Virazole.
Shen Xuan wanted to say more, but hesitated.
Gu Jiao turned around and disappeared into the boundless night.
