The two of them hesitated, looking at the old Marquis. The old Marquis didn’t say a word, leaving with a stern face.
Only then did they once again enter the punishment room.
Gu Changqing was lying on the grass mat, his body covered in lash marks.
"Big Brother!" Gu Chenglin’s eyes were red, he rushed over and helped Gu Changqing up.
Gu Chengfeng looked deeply at his elder brother, turning to his younger brother, he said: "Go to the carriage and bring back the golden wound medicine hidden in the compartment."
"...Okay!" Gu Chenglin choked back a sob, wiped away his tears and left.
There was no one else in the room; Gu Chengfeng sensed the movements outside the punishment room. Guards were stationed outside, but they weren’t too close.
He helped Gu Changqing to sit on the grass mat, leaning against the cold wall.
Actually, he and Gu Chenglin had heard everything their grandfather and elder brother had said earlier. Gu Chenglin, being simple-minded, didn’t grasp the meaning, but he sensed there was something odd.
Gu Chengfeng kneeled down next to Gu Changqing, he looked at him and said, "Big Brother, you’ve changed; you weren’t like this before. What happened between you and Grandfather?"
On the way here, he and Gu Chenglin heard about what happened at the military camp. He thought that their elder brother was just venting for the Gu Family army, so though he felt his elder brother was slightly impulsive, he didn’t suspect anything.
But the interaction between their grandfather and elder brother seemed odd to him.
Previously, his elder brother was extremely respectful towards their grandfather. Whenever their grandfather asked questions, he would always speak freely.
But recently, his elder brother’s conversation with their grandfather had evidently diminished.
At first, he thought that his elder brother was growing up, becoming more reserved. But today, it clearly wasn’t the case.
Was it his imagination? He had the feeling... his elder brother held some resentment towards their grandfather.
"Nothing’s the matter." Gu Changqing responded.
Gu Chengfeng looked at him skeptically, "Nothing, really? Or... are you resenting our grandfather for leaving us behind in the Marquis Residence all these years?"
Gu Changqing closed his eyes, "I said it’s nothing. Why are you talking so much? Have you finished reciting your books?"
Gu Chengfeng choked on his words.
Reciting what book?
Didn’t he bluster his way through all his classes at the academy?
He had no interest in studying!
Nonetheless, despite his lack of interest, his academic performance wasn’t half bad. He was a bright lad; perhaps if he hadn’t been born in the Marquis Residence, the second son who doesn’t need to succeed the family nor was expected much from, maybe he would have diligently studied and entered civil service.
