At night, Gu Jiao was in the room documenting the power and drawbacks of hidden weapons made with black gunpowder. Unbeknownst to her, the night had gotten deep.
Knock, knock, knock.
A soft knock sounded from outside the door. Gu Jiao rubbed her sore neck and looked toward the slightly ajar door, "The door’s open, come in."
Xiao Liulang pushed the door open, carrying a bowl of green bean soup into the room.
He came in front of her and placed the green bean soup on the table.
Gu Jiao looked at the bowl of green bean soup that had been cooled with well water, her head cocking in surprise.
In the past, it was always her bringing things to him. Today, it was as if the sun had risen from the west; he was bringing something to her.
No, that wasn’t quite right.
When she had abdominal pains from the morning sun, he did make her brown sugar water.
But today she had no stomachache nor felt the morning sun, she didn’t understand why he was treating her this way.
Xiao Liulang sat opposite her and calmly said, "I made extra green bean soup when Jing Kong asked for it. I saved a bowl for you."
"Brother-in-law, what are you doing?"
"Making green bean soup."
"I’m not drinking it."
"Jiaojiao wants to drink it."
"Hmm, alright, I’ll have a bowl too."
Upon recalling the time with Xiao Jing Kong, Xiao Liulang gave a light cough.
Gu Jiao didn’t catch the minute change in his expression. She was feeling thirsty, so she picked up the green bean soup, and spooned a mouthful into her mouth: "Hmm, it’s really sweet."
Everything Xiao Liulang made was hard to swallow; only the green bean soup was good. However, the way she was wolfing it down exceeded his expectations.
Xiao Liulang couldn’t help but ask, "Is it that delicious?"
"Yes!" Gu Jiao spooned a mouthful and naturally fed him.
Xiao Liulang was a bit stunned; the look in her eyes was straightforward and simple. She didn’t seem to have other intentions, which made him feel like he was overthinking things and perceiving meanings that didn’t exist.
Xiao Liulang swallowed and gently nodded his head, before taking in the spoonful of soup.
"Is it sweet?" Gu Jiao asked.
"Sweet." He looked at her, unsure if he was describing the sweetness of the soup or hers.
"I think so too." Gu Jiao took the spoon he had just used and continued eating the soup.
Watching her put the spoon into her mouth, Xiao Liulang’s gaze deepened.
"Do you want to eat more?" With his passionate gaze on her, Gu Jiao pushed the green bean soup to him.
"I sort of want to..." Before he could finish the sentence, Xiao Liulang regained his senses. He almost said something he shouldn’t have!
