Lucas was honestly a little surprised. He had promised to send Evelyn a few photos of the painting. With some free time today, he followed through and sent them.
What he didn't expect was to be greeted with a glaring red exclamation mark. He had no idea when she had blocked him.
Maybe during the art exhibit? Or sometime more recently?
Still, he didn't take it to heart. With everything going on lately, it would have been stranger if Evelyn hadn't reacted. Blocking him could very well be her way of expressing dissatisfaction.
It wasn't the first time something like this had happened. He remembered Evelyn had blocked him once before too. But within about a week, she unblocked him like nothing had ever happened.
This time, it felt more of a shame. Only now did he realize just how much effort she had quietly put in all along.
Evelyn, on the other hand, had completely forgotten she had blocked him. She had done it ages ago—both his personal and work accounts had ended up on her blacklist.
That he only just found out didn't come as much of a surprise. Even before she blocked him, Lucas rarely initiated contact. She was the one constantly checking in, sending long, thoughtful messages, most of which he would barely respond to.
What if he didn't find them important? Chances were, he wouldn't respond at all. Most of their conversations had been entirely one-sided. Her paragraphs would be sprinkled with the simplest replies from him.
She figured that ever since she stopped reaching out, Lucas must have felt relieved.
"Is something wrong?" Evelyn didn't answer his earlier question, simply asking in a calm tone.
There was a brief pause on the other end before his voice came through, level but with a faint, unreadable chill. "You asked for photos of that painting, right? They won't go through on WhatsApp, so I'm calling to confirm."
Evelyn lightly rubbed her thumb over her water glass. She could hear the underlying implication in his words.
